I've read all of these questions and just want to make sure we are all talking about the same thing. Just bought a new Dell 1525 laptop. My home pc is hooked up to dsl. Shouldn't I be able to sit near it and automatically get internet connection? I tried that and nothing happened. Now what? Thanks

You need to get a router and connect it to your DSL. Then you'll need a WiFi card for your laptop if it already doesn't have one built in. I would go to Best Buy and ask the Geek Squad, they can help you out much better.

You need a wireless router in order for this to work. Here is the thing though. You sound like a novice computer user, no offense. Setting up a wireless connection is easy for you if you simply click in the lower right where you see the 2 computer monitors. It will show you the wireless networks. If you already have a wireless router, it will be there in the list. However, security is the issue. I have my wifi connection where it would take a miracle for anybody to break into mine. Even if we tell you, I don't think you are going to do the security correctly. I am not picking on you. I have just seen enough novice users to know.

If you do not have a wireless router, I suggest purchasing one from Best Buy or Circuit City. Both stores can setup security for your router for you right in the store for $40. They will leave it up to you to configure your laptop, but it will be easy. However, if you are willing to spend that $40, there might be a better way to go than wireless. Wireless however is still the best for roaming. Stationary devices are best for powerline.

Does your modem have WiFi for beginners? And does your laptop too? Assuming you are running Vista, you should be able to find the wireless icon in the next to the clock somewhere. You may need a wireless security key which is usually found on the side of the router.

You won't just automatically get wireless.

i dont think there is a switch on that model but if you click on the computer sign in the bottom right hand corner (if there is no internet connection there will be a red cross through the screen) here you will be able to choose your internet connection to connect to, if you can not use your wireless im guessing theree is a switch that needs turning on, a registry key has been changed(have fun) or more simply your drivers aren't installed. find the drivers on the internet install em restart and try again.
