I have a sony vaio vgn-fs830/w. It has/had windows Xp which has recently disappeared. I can on ly get on the internet by going through task manager and running it myself. The start button and desktop are missing as is explorer.exe . Anyway, besides all that, I don't want to run windows at all anymore! I was thinking of installing vista, but I am tempted to wait on windows 7 instead. HOW ABOUT LINUX? Does anybody know if linux works on a sony vaio? Any other suggestions?

Yeah, go ahead and install it. Linux can run on practically anything. I have a digital watch that I recently found out has a Linux OS made for it. I also have a calculator and an iPod that have versions of Linux made specifically for them. The Linux kernel is very flexible when it comes to making it work on strange hardware. That's not to say, however, that a Vaio is strange hardware; it should be easy for you.

Just make sure that you know where to get all the necessary drivers after the installation. You may want to save the drivers to CD before you proceed with the installation in case you can't use your network card right away.

Linux works on any computer as long as you no if it is a PPC or x86 processor. Anything thats not pre-2006 Apple or IBM System 7 is gonna be x86. Once you figure that out go to a website like distrowatch.com and check out some of the different distributions of the Linux Kernal, Linux isn't an operating system its a kernal based on UNIX, we use distributions that have that plus a GUI and apps and a lot more. Well what you need to do is find a distro you like, Ubuntu is the most popular and probably has one of the biggest support communities out there, cause with Linux most of your support is other people telling you how to fix problems or you just tinking with stuff till it works. Other distros that are good are openSUSE and Fedora, also there are different desktop environments the two most popular are GNOME and KDE, this is really what you like better, the three distros I mentioned run on both, there are more. I personally like GNOME, because KDE seems slow and is behind most of the time. GNOME is also more customisable imo, so just look of videos of them each and check them out. Once you find you like you can download the image file off of the web and burn it to a cd, this cd then can be used as a live cd which allows you to try out the OS before installing, and they can install. Ubuntu gives out cds for free on their site, but thats down atm, because they have a new system update coming out in 5 days. The others you have to do your self.

The only way to find out for sure is to try it.

If it doesn't work, you can always use your Recovery CD to get Windows back.
