Question:
Issues with my laptop running games?
2012-06-20 18:10:03 UTC
A few weeks ago I attempted to play the game Thief 2 on my laptop, but got a runtime library error, something to do with redistributable c++. Me being an idiot, I uninstalled several Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable things, thinking it would fix the problem and I could install them later. Now almost no games work, aside from KoTOR 2 and Frozen Synapse for some reason, but they run very slowly. When I tried running killing floor I got the error message "Runtime Error! This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. When I tried running Skyrim I got the error message "Error initializing Direct3D! Device is not available." I ran dxdiag and in the Display tab it states that my Direct3D acceleration is disabled, however I cannot turn it back on as when I go Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Adjust screen resolution > Advanced settings > Troubleshoot, the changed settings button is greyed out. Does anyone know what I did to cause this problem and how I can fix it?

Re-install your DirectX..the first error the you got can easily fixed by updating your directx or the games requires a older version of Directx, runtime library error means a DLL( dynamic link library) is missing or corrupted try reading this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX , so uninstalling Microsoft Visual C++ makes it more worst because it is nothing to do with the error that you've encountered, you may encounter more errors in the future because it is possible that other applications/program are also using Visual Studio,

try system restore:

start menu typed in system restore, it will store the settings of your computer just select the date before you've encountered the error

sounds love it is overheating. Laptops like that are no longer meant for coping with severe gaming. by potential of a can of compressed air and attempt to blast out all the airborne dirt and mud it fairly is in all risk inflicting it to overheat.

There are 3 different VC++ redistributables, you typically need them all for gaming.

DX9c is still being updated periodically but uses the same 9c naming convention, make sure it's up to date.
