Hi Geezer1916

My name is Harish and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. The problem may occur due to a corrupt video driver. I would recommend two things, Update the video drivers and ensure you are using the latest BIOS version. You could download both from the dell support page - (Enter the Service tag, Select the Operating system and update BIOS & Video drivers).

It could be down to a virus, or it could be simply down to an application that has a schedule to turn on automatically, but only you could know this.

So until then, I advised downloading some anti-virus protection and giving your computer a good scan. I would also like to advise you to either ctrl + alt + delete --- > Task Manager ---> Processors ---> and simply take note of all the processors and then simply google "Is this [process name] safe?" and it will tell you if it's a virus or not, and the instructions to manually remove it.

ONE other thing, the worst thing you can possibly do to any computer EVER, is turning it of by holding down the power button, this could severely damage your computer's components, and the more you do it, the more damage. A computer needs to shutdown!, which gives it time to turn off all components without causing damage. The more you hold that power button and force it to turn off, the more components will be getting nuked/fried.

Just hold down the power button, I do that everytime and I used to even unplug the power cable and remove the battery pack. Even though I don't have the same laptop as you lol. and I know this sounds stupid but make sure ur not pressing restart lol. that's all I got.

Try to scan for virus using some free anti-virus program like Avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc. See if it's infected by virus.

I think it's a new laptop right? If that doesn't help, you may want to contact the customer support for help.

Hello Geezer1916,

In Start menu, control panel, system choose advanced system settings.

On the advanced tab you will see "Startup and Recovery". Click on settings turn off "Automatically Restart" under "System Failure".

Restart and see if this clears the problem.

Also see if there are any updates available from Dell:

initially log in via safe mode and see if it shuts down normally this will determine whether it is a Microsoft problem or a 3rd party software problem

If it shuts down normally from safe mode, then there is probably a program preventing normal shut down.

type msconfig.exe in the search box, choose selective startup. Disable the 1st half of the startup items and reboot, if it shuts down normally you know the suspect program is in the disabled half. Keep narrowing down selection until you find the culprit.

Place a couple of ice cubes on your keyboard over night, if you have no ice cubes, fill a plastic cup/bowl/container and let it freeze then apply that Instead, make sure the ice is thoroughly frozen so that water does not seep into your keyboard. This will absorb the additional power from your laptop itself thus allowing you to shut down your laptop manually.

Probably a virus which tries to keep the computer on so it can run programmes without you knowing.
