My computer is running really slow. I thought it was because all of my music I had downloaded but I deleted that and my computer is still running slow. I want to know how to restart my computer from like the beginning with nothing downloaded. I dont want to delete everything but I want it so its like I just got it from the store. I ran virus scans on my computer so I dont think its a virus making it slow. PLEASR HELP!

Do the following to put your computer and Windows in good shape and speed:

Disable unneeded services

Click Start and then click Run (or Search, in Vista and 7), then type the following command and press the Enter key:

services.msc

Maximize the window for easy viewing.

If you have a home desktop computer (not networked to other computers), and not an office desktop, you can safely set the following services to manual or disabled, as mentioned below. Depending on whether your have a Windows service pack installed, you may or may not see all these services listed. Ignore the ones that you don't see in the services list.

For each of the following services, right click it and then click Properties. In the Startup type drop down menu, click manual and then click OK.

Set the following services to manual:

Fast User Switching Compatibility Service

Application Layer Gateway Service

Background Intelligent Transfer Service

COM+ Event System Service

COM+ System Application Service

Cryptographic Services Service

Distributed Link Tracking Client Service

Indexing Service

IPSEC Services Service

Network Location Awareness (NLA)

Service Portable Media Serial Number

Service Print Spooler Service (You may set it to automatic, if you have a printer attached and print frequently)

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service

Telephony Service

Terminal Services Service

WebClient Service

Set the following services to disabled:

Alerter Service

ClipBook Service

Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service

DNS Client Service

Error Reporting Service

Messenger Service

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Service (Set it to manual, if you use the MS Backup utility)

Net Logon Service

NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Service

Network DDE Service

Network DDE DSDM Service

NT LM Security Support Provider Service

Performance Logs and Alerts Service

QoS RSVP Service

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager Service (Set this to manual, if you use remote desktop)

Remote Registry Service

Routing and Remote Access Service

Server Service (If you're on a network, don't disable it )

Smart Card Service

Smart Card Helper Service

SSDP Discovery Service

Telnet Service

Upload Manager Service

Volume Shadow Copy Service

Wireless Zero Configuration Service (Don't disable it, if using a laptop and a wireless router)

Free up Disk Space on the windows drive (mostly drive C)

Disable some startup items in MSConfig

Remove some items from the Windows Startup group

Clean up your Registry. Clean up your registry regularly, say once a week or every fortnight. Use a free program like Regcleaner from tweaknow.com

Remove unneeded/unused fonts

Enable Cleartype in disply properties - advanced tab.

Disable short file names to speed up Windows

Run this from a command prompt,, by running the command - cmd from the run (or search) box. The command is:

fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1

Disable timestamp for last access to a file to speed up Windows

Again, run this from the command prompt:

fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1

For Windows Vista, disable superfetch

Run the following command from the Search box: sc config Superfetch start= disabled (The space after the = sign is intentional)

Disable the Windows' built-in zip feature

To disable this feature, in the Run box, type the following command and hit the Enter key:

regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

A reboot is required for the changes to take effect. For more information, see http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-202

Download and install the Microsoft TweakUI Powertoy. It has many Windows tweaks and options that you can enable or disable.

Periodically reinstall windows

It's a good practice to reinstall Windows, say every 3 months or so. Don't forget to BACKUP (http://www.backup.info) your data files before the reinstall. If your system is infected with too many viruses or malware it may be better to reinstall Windows. Here are some Youtube videos about installing Windows:

Did you empty the recycle bin - it's only gone when you empty that

Seem you need to unload more downloads - the system is bogged down

with saved searches and your music downloads which take up a lot of space

When you finish deleting and emptying your recycle bin - it's always a

good idea to run defragment to re-arrange your scattered files

You're taxing the memory with too much stuff

Take the Disks that came with the computer and find the one with the Operating System Key Code. Shove that in the CD drive. After that, its a guided process.

Restart means to reboot and vice-versa. Start button, restart etc.

You mean you want to restore your computer to factory settings.

First step is to tell us what brand and model it is so we can look up the info.

Hey buddy,

Format the C drive. Install a Windows 7 and you are good to go.

But do keep in mind that it requires 2GB RAM< + Dual Core<.

You can't, because if want to you go to control panel>add or remove programs> and delete system 32 which I HIGHLY suggest you don't remove because that wipes out internet and everything. If your computer is running slowly remove programs you don't use anymore and makes it run much faster.
