Question:
Why does my laptop stop working for awhile after I close the lid.?

I have a Gateway NV52 laptop and it works perfectly, same as when I got it a few years ago, I have never dropped it or anything. Only problem is, whenever someone closes the lid, it decides not to want to work for awhile. I can turn it on but the screen will not work for awhile and the Hard drive does not boot up I believe, yet the touch buttons on top work and the CD drive works.

It is not my connection because I had it working for about a month straight, never closing the lid and everything was fine, I could open the lid as much as I wanted up or close it to right before it would normally turn off. The second though the lid closes, it shuts down and then decides to do whatever it does.

I have tried everything I could find on the internet from doing a hard reset, resetting the bios, and etc. Only thing I have not tried is moving around my RAM sticks because my motherboard can only take up to 4GB and that is what I have in it. That combined with the fact it has been working fine as long as I do not close the lid, playing at peak performance as can be expected on games, makes me think it isn't even a problem. It is not dusty inside and seeing as if the lid is closed it will not even start to turn on means that the button inside that tells the screen if the laptop is open or close is still functional

This problem is really annoying me and I kinda need my laptop until the 1st of November when I will be upgrading to an Alienware laptop for my engineering classes. Any other ideas would be a great help.

All laptops have a hardware switch that forces the machine into suspend mode when the screen is placed against the keyboard, ie: you close it. There is no way to disable this as it is a universal design feature to 1. save battery life as the machine assumes that you will not be using it and 2. to protect the moving parts as the machine assumes that you are more likely to move it around when it is closed. You say it comes back after a while and that's because when the laptop is suspended it writes all of the information in memory onto the hard drive. The hard drive does not 'boot up' again, but has to load the RAM image back into memory. Since you have 4GB of RAM, this may take some time.

Again, it's a design feature and it won't damage the machine. You just have to be patient with it.

You might want to look at mac air or other high end laptops before deciding to buy alienware for engineering classes, the little pin switch between the laptop screen and the laptop when close the lid could be defective ,recess to a point where when open the lid stays in the sleep mode ,might have to check the power options functions as one answer said ,since you are getting another laptop

might just want to shutdown normally instead of closing the lid to put it in the sleep mode

Have you checked the power saving settings? To save power the laptop will either go into hibernate mode or shut off the screen. Go to control panel, power settings and turn off hibernation or sleep mode. Also tell it not to turn off the hard disk and processor.

circulate to start > administration Panel and seek for the information superhighway-Cam set up or something relating to it. in case you stumble on it seem to work out if each thing is working conventional. yet yeah, the wooshing sound is your fan.
