You may be able to launch Factory Restore. You will be able to save files also - see below "a prompt to backup the user files before beginning the recovery is displayed."

Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible

If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition. The Recovery Manager can be launched during the start up process by following the steps below.

Press the Power button to start the PC, and then press the f11 key when the standard BIOS prompts are displayed on the black screen.

NOTE:Pressing the F11 key during the startup on a computer with an HP factory image will start the system recovery process even if the prompt is not displayed.

If the HP Recovery Manager can access the recovery partition on the hard drive, a prompt to backup the user files before beginning the recovery is displayed. Follow any on-screen instructions.

If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix any system errors, you will need to use the personalized recovery disc that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition.

If you have not created the personalized recovery disc, or the discs are corrupted, you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP.

When the Recovery Manager starts, follow the step-by-step recovery instructions shown above.

On start-up try pressing f8 a few times and booting from safe mode, it could be that you have a virus or that the boot/start-up is corrupt.

If you manage to boot in safe mode attempt to clear the laptop of any malicious viruses using a anti virus.

If the laptop does not even display anything when the power button is pushed then I can't give any more advise than to replace it :S.

You may have to format the hardrive/reinstall windows but hopefully it's just a virus for now.

As someone mentioned if you have a windows disk or your friend does you can attempt to use that and boot from it to tell help you troubleshoot the problem further.

If you have access to another computer you can download legitimately the W7 OS your daughter has on the laptop from here http://heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links You will have to burn the ISO image to a dvd and of course it will nee activating after 30 days. Read the web page carefully and follow the instructions and make sure you download the English version. You could try and use the Product Key on your daughters laptop to activate but don't hold your breath. Good luck

Sorry, Just noticed your asking about Vista. This is Windows 7 but should still work. A product key will still cost you. I would persevere with instructons already given

Try and find out where the virus could be located, if it's in the Laptops files and servers you might need to get someone to re-build your Laptop. If not try and get that windows disk, if u can't get it and you backed-up your Laptops files then just get someone to wipe your Laptop and load up the backed up files. There are other ways to fix problems like this, the best way is to get that disc, if at all possible.

It's very unlikely that it is a virus. A virus wants your computer to be active so it can do illegal things.

See if this solves the problem.

Hi do the simple thin and take it to a tech guy or girl let them look at it, it should be recoverable and without too much expense.

If you have your Windows authenticity key, you just need to find a friend who has the same version of Windows, or torrent a CD Image of that version of Windows.

But yes, it sounds like the only way to fix it at this point is with the Windows disc.

As soon as you start the laptop tap one off the F keys eg F8 for example. Go through the keys till you find the right one they can be different in some computers,

Look for an option - safe mode with networking and start this (if you get your computer started this way things are looking good)

Go on the internet and download malware bytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ its free, and run a full sytem scan and remove any found virus (while still in safe mode)

Restart your computer as normal.

Dont go to a tech guy until you have tried this as it is free and will not cost you and its not too hard to do and you will know for the next time :)

However if this does not work you may want to take it to a tech guy but there are other options but try this first

You could also look for windows recovery options to if safe mode won't work your computer may have a built in recovery partition which will restore your laptop to factory settings but be warned you will lose all your photos videos and any saved documents this is a last option though you can recover from a windows disc but you will get basic windows and lose any software that came bundled with your computer
