The most likely cause is a bloated registry which has become the home for all kinds of useless bits and pieces of data. Whenever you start the computer the system reads the values from the registry entries to initialize the components that are essential for system to run smoothly. Whenever any change is made to the system settings or a program is installed or uninstalled, a new entry is generated in the registry. In this way, with continuous use the registry gets piled up with data most which is not used by the system. Especially the outdated entries and traces of incomplete software uninstallation remain in the registry without any use making the registry size bigger. These unimportant registry entries make the system slower as well as prone to frequent system errors. With a registry cleaner you can clean up the registry and fix the registry quiet easily.

Vista sucks up a lot of resources, so if your laptop is cheap, it definitely won't run at peak capacity. You should try turning off Aero and stuff. Go to control panel - Appearance and Personalization - Personalization - Theme, then turn it to Windows Classic.

You can use a registry cleaner to clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

First step, do a full shut down, let it sit for 20 seconds, and boot back up.

Run Disk Cleanup. Within Disk Cleanup, you can delete all but the most recent restore points, which could save you a lot of space - especially in Vista.

Next, check your drive's fragmentation level. Windows is inherently bad with fragmentation. Essentially, it saves bits and pieces of files all over the physical hard drive, which mean when it access files, it has a lot of searching to do. With a 320GB drive, that could be a lot of work. Check http://www.defraggler.com/ for a small, effective, easy to use defrag program. Defraggler will also tell you what files are fragmented. If there are any that just can't be defragmented, like Outlook files, download and run Contig (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx). You'll want to unzip the file and drag/drop the fragmented file onto the Contig EXE.

There are a numerous reasons why your computer would have a bad slow down, but in my experience, fragmentation is the biggest and most often culprit.

About the lid, it was probably set to turn off after a set time.

Do this:

Vista/7.

Start>Type, "cmd" in the search box>Right click "cmd.exe">Run as Administrator.

XP.

Right click the Task Bar>Task Manager>Applications Tab>New Application>Type in, "cmd.exe".

Then.

Type, "chkdsk /f /x /r" into the command prompt. You will get some information about the format of your hard drive, and you'll get a message about chkdsk being unable to lock it, press "y" when the question comes up about whether you want to schedule a chkdsk on the next boot up. Then restart your computer, and let it run. Basically it checks for errors on your hard drive and fixes any that it finds. It will take a while, depending on how big your hard drive is.

Still to slow?

Try Perfect Disk: http://www.perfectdisk.com/

It's the best defragging program out there, because it defrags your Windows directory, which is what is causing all the slow downs. It uses, "SMART Placement" to place all your files at the front of the hard drive, and then when you download new files, they are placed infront of those files, so it's all streamlined. Otherwise you would have files at the back and the front of the hard drive, this is why it's taking longer to get the files; a.k.a for Windows to operate.

Still slow?

Make sure under power management you're running on "Max Performance" or "Plugged in". If you're running on "Battery" then the CPU is throttled, so it doesn't run at it's full capacity, meaning your laptop will be slower.

Otherwise, write up the specs and I'll see if I can spot the problem.

Regards and I hope I helped,

Mus. :)

Best action would be to re-format your laptop so you get rid of all the crap that builds up on them. (happens to everyone)

Backup everything and format the hard drive

If you don't want to do this go through everything and delete everything you don't want and then run Disk Defragmenter which might help a bit Also increasing your RAM depending on your laptop you should have at least 2GB of RAM.

1.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options

delete cookies

delete files (offline files)

clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)

click o.k., and Restart

2.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

3.Temporarily close Quick Launch:

Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch

4.Open My Computer

right-click on C:

click Properties

click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run.

5.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

6.Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.

-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If these suggestions don't help, you might need more memory.

Last, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
