Maybe a Intel centrino 2 Vpro/w Intel Core 2 Duo T9600, a Intel Core 2 Quad or Extreme, Nvidia or Nvidia graphic (PIC Express Card type), Vista Ultimate,MS office 2007 ultimate, 800GB hard drive (Less in the market), 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, and lots more. You can get a MSI turbo book GX600 to overclock the CPU since it has a Turbo botton.

You can wait for Core i7 to come out this year "2009"

There are several features that today's notebook need in order to be successful.

User Friendliness - Features must be interesting, but not complex.

Sex Appeal - Computers are becoming a statement these days. Good design in essential.

Security - Modern security software is needed for safety of private information.

Mobility - Close it. Lift it. Carry it. Simple.

Technical - Fast speeds. A slow speed is a nightmare. Also enough memory to store the multimedia requirements of todays technology.

Prizewinning Feature - Large high resolution screen. The less 'edge' and more 'screen' the notebook has, the better. An interactive 'touch' screen would be a great feature for the future.

Go to Dell Outlet and buy a previously ordered new laptop. Even if a computer is ordered but cancelled that computer must be put into the refurbished inventory. This means you can buy a brand new, never turned on computer for about half the price.

I would get at leeast 3GB of memory, a fast Intel Core 2 Duo processor (over T5000). At least 250 GB hard drive, a web cam, and if this is meant for some decent games then a decent video card. You may pay $700 for a $1400 laptop. Why anyone would buy new I do not know. Oh the warrenty that's why. Well Dell will still give you the one year warrenty that comes on every purchase. HA! great deal!

I bought an Acer Aspire 5720 advertised as 1 Gb RAM Intel core 2 Duo, running Win Vista Hm Prem. Couldn't understand why it was so slow. Took it to a different PC shop to upgrade the RAM & discovered it had been fitted with 2 x 512 RAM, not happy Jan. Yes it was 1 Gb RAM but a very sneaky way of doing it. I ended up buying 2 x 1 Gb RAM. Vista is RAM hungry. Make sure there is plenty of RAM & no shortcuts taken. You really would need to know what the person wants the notebook for prior to purchasing. I don't think there is a true market 'standard' that would suit everyone.

Alot of u people are idiots!!! You don't know your stuff. If u want a notebook/laptop and u want Vista, u at least need 3gb RAM, Core 2 Duo processor @2.26gHz and a 250gb Hard-drive. It's better to know what u'd personally want in a PC, without spending alot!! To play the latest games such as the "Warfare" playing ones, u need a 2.5gHz one! It's like comparing a 50mHz LCD/Plasma TV to a 100mHz one. The 100 mHz one is going to b better, for action movies and sports. Vista OS needs close to 2gb RAM to run. At least a 15.4' Widescreen will do the job. Anything less you're wasting your time, unless they want to be very portable -- get an 11.1' screen(but they're very expensive)! If the person is a games freak; Apple are crap, as they're only good for media, photo editing and programming -- even tho Adobe Photoshop is the best for Windows/Vista OS, and has more features and can do more than what Apple's one does. People only want Apple, because they reckon they look good, and are also told a lot of ****!! Go to the relevant forums and "Google" them up. Whirpool.com is a good one! I'd get a Vista operating one[much better than Windows], at least most people (70% of people prefer PC over Apple, and use it!! -- There's only 20-odd% that use Apple[and most of these would say that because they think it looks better, but can't afford it as they don't use it!). U need at least a DVD multiburner, so they can burn their own stuff, and have at least 3 USB ports for peripherals and USB drives! U don't need a webcam, as most inbuilt webcams are crap. The Logitech ones are quite good and are portable as well! I have a Sony Vaio 17' screen 2.7gHz HD 1080 notebook with a Blu-ray burner, but I was given that thru work, some mths back. But they're over $3,000! My old notebook was a 15.4' Toshiba Satellite, and they're good - which I claimed on my tax cheque last year. I still use it as a personal one and backup! Sony Vaio's are the only ones that have Blu-Ray burners in them, because they have the license and were the inventors of the technology! And they're better than Apple's MacBook Pro, and also have much better screens!

As long as it works, was made in the last fifteen years, and they don't already own a better one, I expect most people would be thoroughly happy with any notebook. Indeed I would be a little offended if I gave someone a notebook and they felt it necessary to check all its features before expressing happiness about receiving such an extravagant present. You shouldn't look a gift notebook in the processor, as the old saying goes.

Power and speed are great and all that but if you buy a notebook that is so heavy and very hard to lug around town, it will just end up with all the crap gifts in the bedroom closet or in the living room. Buy something with a compromise between weight, battery life, memory and CPU quality to get the job done. Everybody wants to watch a movie or do some work on the fly but no one ever hardly plays MMORPGS and edits animation on the road.

I personally think this is what a laptop for a gift should be:

-A wide screen laptop- 16-20 inch- MUST be a HD scr.

-HD graphics

-Good sound card

-DVD/Blu-ray combo drive

-WINDOWS XP- NOT vista, unless they really like it, xp is simpler to use

-a colour of their choice

-4 gig RAM

-250g to 500g HD

-Intel Centrino Processor/intel dual core

-Sleek and Stylish

-Perhaps, if the person wants- a touchscreen/tablet pc

-Scratchless

-Built in Webcam

-Brand New Carry Case

-All required programs pre-installed (maybe by you)- needed is M$ Office 03/07

-Virus Protection/firewall

-Wifi/Wireless card/Blue tooth compatibility

-TV tuner- always good for anyone

-at least 4 USB slots

-(obviously) power cable

-And long Battewey life!

-FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but then again, you did not define if you were going to purchase a iBook (mac) or a Windows NoteBook. The above points are for windows. Mac is alot easier to chose as they BASICLY have the same features. To make someone happy, who have little experience windows computers, i suggest a Mac/iBook. For someone who has spent their whole life with Windows, i suggest a Windows Laptop with the afore mentioned details. i may suggest more, but this is mainly all i can think of!!!

I've just wrote an article on how to choose the right laptop. There are many things to consider. Major ones are: how much money are you ready to spend and whether a gaming video card is required or not. You can read the full article here http://www.desktoplaptopreviews.ca/laptops/guides/How-To-Choose-A-Laptop-Notebook-Netbook.aspx but in short:

- gaming laptop costs $1000 and up

- laptop for surf Internet, create word documents and check email ~ $500 and up

Also it is not always better to buy the most cool and expensive one. Check netbooks they are very small and portable, maybe it will be even better than big ass 17 inch gaming laptop.

Depends what they are interested in. A fast processor and a decent amount of ram would be the basic structure. Bluetooth is a essential need in modern 21st century society, with a matter of months until all cars are fitted with one. DVD writer is preferable and should be standard in every laptop fitted with Vista. Any screen above 13.1" is a good for everyday computering. Wireless Lan is fitted in every new laptop on the market so that's not a worry. Webcam is the future way of communication so i would say that is essential. Finally recommended brands are

-Sony

-Acer

-Dell

-Asus

-HP

hope that help you computer buyers

Depends who your buying for.

If their a gamer, buy a laptop with a great video card with an intel processor.

Designer, get a Macbook.

Video/ Film Producer or Game Designer....

Macbook Pro or HP Pavilion zv6000

Student, you can get a deal on a macbook that comes with parallel desktop and a printer.

For a home, get a Desktop. Maybe a Dell or HP

A Mom would like an HP if she shops online, scrapbooks, or gets recipes, it will do. If she is a mac fan and you've got the money, get a mac.

If i were you, i would think from the view of the person to whom i am going to gift it.

A laptop with intel centrino with say 80 gb will be enough for a kid under 10-12 yrs but for a kid above this age group it is more likely or i should say, it is certain that the kid will be using internet a lot and thus one with 120 gb or more with dual processor, 1 gb ram, norton 360 blue tooth, wireless etc will be better.

As a gift, people donot expect much in terms of performance. However, appearance and features do score big impression:

1. Webcam

2. Built-in stereo speakers

3. Sleek design

4. Color

5. Wifi

6. Weight

2 GB RAM standard. Speed.

Most men only feel comfortable with black, maybe silver, but the girls in my family - one had to have pink, and the other one leapt on the only laptop with a watermark pattern in the colour (which was a flower design on a purple background), but she would also have chosen a black one with stripes.

Some sort of shallow padding with ventilation underneath to prevent overheating when on soft surfaces like the actual lap or on top of the covers in bed. Stands are too big and bulky. I haven't seen anything meeting that description though.

I work at a uni and the students love walking around carrying their laptop open, so if they can do that as soon as they open such a gift, it would feel very suitable and useful for them, not just a cool thing or fashion accessory, but helping them in their daily life too.

Plenty of ram, Plenty of hdd space, fast processor, Lcd wide screen monitor with HD capability and Tv card, DVD Burner, Plenty of Usb Slots, More fans, Better connection between computer and monitor - as weakest point on laptops, Web Cam, wireless networking and also ethernet port, Charger and Power cord,

And what would really make me happy is:

***Spare battery and recharger for it whilst using laptop***

Proper Software ie OS software Xp or Vista OEM disks, motherboard and driver disk, Proper Anti-virus Software And Firewall or Internet Security Disks ready to be installed. Free Internet Access etc

I want to be able to turn it on and be able to do everything without worrying about setup initially and have everything already at your finger tips ready to go. But if things go wrong want have all the necessary disks - proper disks not ghost disks of software and all at a reasonable price.

A notebook with a large enough screen, something with a large hard drive as well as one with a lot of RAM. But this all depends on who you are buying it for and what the person is going to use it for.

things to consider - age, uses, mobility

If they are older, they probably want a big screen. If they are taking it around with them they probably want a smaller screen and for it to be smaller (15"). If in a dorm - they may want to use it as a tv so get tv tuner card capabilities. If they like gaming, make sure you get a good video card (expensive in laptops). if they are just using it to sit on a counter and to surf the internet and share pictures, don't spend more than $500-600. Make sure you get a intel dual core - I am seeing some christmas cheapies with the old single core - no go! Get the warranty if they are younger! Warranties today cover the batteries which always lose life after a year or so. All laptops today are wireless ready - you may want to make sure they have a wireless router at home already or try to get one free when you buy the laptop. I am not that girly girl but I would really like a pink one myself! I bought my brother a red one to match his college colors. They may need a new copy of office so that will be about 79-100 on sale. Buy a neoprene cover/sleeve that matches their personality. The least I would go on memory is really 3 gb, maybe 2gb if it is just going to be internet surfing, pictures, stuff my mom would do.

my notebook does all the things i want it to... but i can think of a couple things that would be cool

av in/out - effectively turn it into a tv

and a touch screen - works for the iPhone, why wouldn't it work to a notebook??
anonymous

Well... It depends who you are buying it for. And how much you are willing to pay. If money isn't an option then get the new Macbook Pro. It has a large 17" screen and you can customize whatever u want in it on the website.

http://store.apple.com/au/configure/MB766X/A?mco=MTkzODk1Ng

If you are buying it for a game geek then that Macbook would be great.

But if they just need it for schooling and stuff, a simple laptop would be sufficent. So long as it has a good processor.

first of all i think you should stick to the good namebrands like DELL, HP, and SONY!. dont go with toshiba, acer, etc.

then you should look at the operating system: use windows vista home premium or ultimate, dont go with basic.

then go with the memory ram, get at least 2 gb of ram (for slow people)

3gb of ram (ok) and 4gb of ram (awesome).

then go with the hard drive memory, get a hdd of 250 gb hdd or more.

finally the processor: get intel ! dont go for the amd.

finally look at the screen size a standard laptop is of 15.4'. finally the warranty get insurance! for best buy get the oops insurance covers everything but its expensive. good luck.

Completely depends on the person.

Do they want a big screen for movies, or a small screen for easy carrying? Do they want Windows Vista or XP? Do they need a nice video card (more expensive) for gaming?

It's hard to give advice without knowing what the person wants in a laptop.

Get one with the biggest hard drive and memory you can afford. It would be great if it had it's own dedicated video memory as well.

A DVD Burner/DVD Player/BluRay combo is possible.

As many usb ports as you can get is nice as well.....always plugging things in.

A really good built in WiFi or LAN card is high priority as well.

Screen should be no smaller than 17" (believe me...you will regret a screen smaller than 17" ).

That's about it.Good luck.

Design - is it sleek, stunning design

Speed - need 3G Ram

Fast hard drive - 2.0GHz or faster

Bells and whistles - wi-fi, webcam, built-in TV tuner

Weight - light weight computers are better for people on the move but 17' computers are nice for people that are replacing their desktop with a laptop and to watch movies

I think a big wide screen is always great as they can watch movies on it without having to squint. It's also important to have a high speed so they can install whatever they want without it slowing down. Some people like their notebooks to be coloured to reflect their personality but I don't think it's that important, I'm more interested in how it works!

USER-FRIENDLYNESS (ABOVE ALL)

DURABILITY (must put ATTENTION on this)

FAST multi-core processors (can open many processor eating applications, especially for users of picture-editing programs, IDEs)

POWERFUL video card (can run applications smoothly without that hang or slow-mo effect)

shock & water PROOF/RESISTANT (this would be very COOL!)

LONGER battery life( a must especially notebooks now have many features, and because of that, they forget the BATTERY LIFE!)

POWERFUL RAM with HIGH capacity (4GB+?, can run many applications at once, and can fight the illness of Vista!, the eating of RAM by Aero)

PORTABILITY (NOT HEAVY, especially if widescreen -> they like watching movies or games, if not widescreen, because of they like portable!)

retractable charger of the laptop (portability)

GOOD wireless capability (does not drain battery easily)

DVD/CD Burner (fast and durable!)

POWERFUL sound system (loud, not cracked-like, must feel like watching cinema/theater!)

built-in touchpad mouse (with a button/switch for turning it on/off besides it!)

POWERFUL/DURABLE and HIGH capacity hard disk (200GB+)

bluetooth capability (user friendly bluetooth utility!)

built-in camera (angle can be changed, w/ user friendly software!)

built-in mic (for recording and voice chat)

built-in fingerprint reader (with a pre-installed software that is compatible with any OS!)

switch/button for access of fan (speed, on or off)

Infrared Rays Transfer (if possible)

Touch Screen Monitor (easy to use)

**accessories***

bluetooth mouse (minimal battery usage! w/ scroll)

bluetooth num-key pad (because the num-key pad of notebooks is hard to use!)

bluetooth headset (minimal battery usage w/ mic)
