Some things you can try:

(1) Is there a CD, DVD, or floppy (if you have a floppy drive) inserted in one of your drives? If so, remove it and try to boot again. Most computers are set to boot from these drives first, and if your OS doesn't recognize it as a bootable disk, startup may fail.

(2) Go into BIOS (setup) and change the boot order of your devices so it looks at the hard drive first. (If this doesn't work, though, change it back to its original configuration.)

(3) Check the connections on your hard drive to ensure they are in tact.

Could be one of two things. Your hard drive crapped out or there is an issue with the motherboard. The harddrive may have disconnected itself from mobo, or the mobo got toasted. Very common with HPs actually. Data is usually still recoverable. Take it to a shop.

Is your data valuable - if so you probably need professional help. On the other hand if you don't mind losing it try using the HP restore disk (This will try to reformat - but it cannot help if the damage is physical).
