You can protect your laptop from being accessed by another user when you set up password protection, which is available either through Windows and through the BIOS Setup utility. For complete protection, it is advisable that you set passwords in Windows as well as through BIOS Setup. To cancel password protection, set an empty password. checkout this site for a step by step guide http://www.learnlaptoprepair.blogspot.com/2013/09/how-to-set-up-password-protection-on_26.html hope you find it useful.

Depending on your operating system - which you forgot to mention - (XP, Vista, Win 7 or 8 or Mac).
If you use Windows click, START > Control Panel > User Accounts > (then)
click on your account and select, Create a Password.
Beware: Any administrator password for any account on a Windows PC can be hacked in less than 2-minutes.
-Good luck.

The operating system does effect to find out what we need sometimes, hence your problem is same, if windows xp? Then click 'start' then click at the top of the image icon. It will bring you to your user account! At the left side u can 'set a password', to your user account.
