Can you play american DVD's (region 1?) on a u.k computer?

if not is there a programme you can get which will do it?
i want to be sure i can play them before i buy..
my laptop has a dvd-multidrive.

Computers use software to play a DVD, so that is just a matter of the right program. PowerDVD or Windows Media Player might work just fine. Buy one region 1 DVD and test it. Keep trying different software players until one plays it. Good luck!

Region codes are read at the player. Some computers allow you to switch the region of your drive, but only about five times then it locks in whatever region you switch to last. There are programs out there to crack DVD codes but they are questionable at best. I would suggest buying a second drive something cheap that is DVD-ROM only and set the region to U.S. or Canada. You will also need to make sure your palyer has the right codecs to play NTSC format DVDs.
