Trust me, stick with XP or get a Mac. Stay far away from Vista.

Get the faster Vista because in the end, you're getting a newer version of Windows and on top of that, faster hardware. Also, software developers are now focusing on creating new programs for Vista and in a couple of years, your XP will start feeling like you're living in the dark ages. Also, many professional critics agree that Vista is better than XP. Most software for XP also work on Vista even if they were not specifically designed for Vista. If your hardware, such as printer, scanner, etc, is fairly new and from a well-known company, you will be provided with updated drivers for Vista on their website. So really, there is no point in getting an older OS and a slower computer.

If you are playing games go with vista. If you are going to be doing email, internet, and watching videos go with media center. Keep in mind both of those operating systems are not the preferred OS's to use right now. Windows Vista is buggy and runs a lot of applications slower than Windows XP Pro. You also might have problems running certain programs on Vista. Windows media center is based off of Windows XP, but you lose a lot of features. Personally I would choose the faster laptop and have Windows XP Pro installed.

I would avoid Vista for the time being. It really has no advantages unless you get the top of the line Ultimate version. Plus a lot of drivers for peripherals have still not been upgraded to interface with Vista. That means it is possible to have printers, cameras, etc. that won't work with Vista.

Stick with XP Professional. It is very stable, is still being supported by Micro$oft, and uses less resources than Vista

XP media center on a "slower" one I would not go to vista till at least service pack 1 comes out

Either is fine. To be honest, it depends on what you're going to do with the computer. If it's gaming, you might want to go for the XP one. If it's regular use (ie., Internet browsing, email, word processing, etc.), go for the Vista one.

And then there's the price difference. It's basically all up to your preference.

Good luck..

And don't listen to the guy below me. Vista is not buggy.. that is people who don't have it and are running on speculation. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and I've had less compatibility and performance problems than on Windows XP MCE2005 x86.

At this point in time, I would go with the media center just because Vista has SOOO many bugs with it driver compatability and other problems that even if the faster comp has vista, you'll spend time trying to find drivers and programs that can handle vista. As of April 3rd, 2007 go with media center. maybe in a year when the bugs are fixed I would go with vista.

I've been running 32 bit windows vista home premium on a decked out laptop (dual core AMD Turion 64, 1gig ram, 256 meg video).

I was hesitant at first, and actually wrote quite a few screeds against it, due to microsofts tendencies to beta test its software on paying customers - but it has actually been pretty darn smooth.

I mainly use mine in my studio to run softsynths like arturias minimoog, modular moog, and ARP2600. It handles them perfectly.

what do YOU think?! of course i would rather have a newer version on a FASTER one, than an older version on a "slightly slower" one.
