FYI your Best Choice that offers maximum flexibility for all Notebook and Desktop PCs in my opinion is the LINKSYS WUSB300N Wireless N USB Network Adapter (about $70) bec this WiFi Wireless N card is good for the newer Notebook PCs that use the Express Slot, the older Notebook PCs which uses the PCMIA WiFiCards and it's very easy to use on Desktop PCs as well.
FYI I have 3 Dell Notebook PCs and 3 Desktop PCs (Dell Dimension, Gateway Media and Sony Vaio) and when attempting to fit my 1st Notebook PC Gateway Pentium IV that did not come with built-in WiFi, we started with the earlier LINKSYS USB version Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Speedbooster WUSB54GS. However we live in a big monster home with high ceilings etc and had acquired a Sony Vaio Desktop for my daughter who before I had a chance to snake wires through our 2 attics to get to her upper level bedroom surprisingly she was able to get this Linksys USB Wireless G WiFi with Speedbooster up and running so I have delayed the hard-wire installation for some time...
Hope the Above Info Helps!

Too much trouble, it is easier and safer to get a secure connection through a wireless router. I would get a wireless G router, and read the manual or get someone to set it up.
