I am pretty computer illiterate, I can work internet and word, but I know nothing of the technical part of it. My sister wants to know if she should get this computer for $900.
It has:
2 GB RAM
160 GB HDD
Intel core2 Duo T6600 processor
15.4" screen
DVD/CD Player and burner
4 year warranty (NBD)
Bluetooth and webcam
Windows Vista Home Basic

What do these features enable exactly?
It's an Acer Extensa 5630
I haven't heard people say good things about Vista. Is it really as bas as people say it is? What's wrong with it?

DEFINITELY NOT!! Thats a bad deal for sure. My favorite brand is Acer, they have excellent products for very reasonable prices. Im a hardcore computer gamer and am very picky about my computers.

Also, in regards to your Vista question: Vista is ok. Its not bad, but its not good really either. It does what you want it to and thats about it. If you can get a computer with windows 7, I would very highly recommend that. It does everything you want, and it will do it before you know you want it done.

Here's Acer's website:

2 GB RAM- This is your memory, it allows for programs to be run. 2 GB is a good amout for normal people.

160 GB HDD- This is your actually storage space which holds your music, pictures, and other stuff you save to the computer.

Intel core2 Duo T6600 processor- This is the processor, it is the brains of the computer, its a good processor

15.4" screen -The size of your screen.

DVD/CD Player and burner- Reads and Writes, CD's, DVD.

4 year warranty (NBD)- Warranty

Bluetooth and webcam- Bluetooth is a transmission standard for like headsets and other things. If you don't know what Bluetooth is, you will probably not use it. The webcam lets you take pictures and videos, and also have video chats.

Windows Vista Home Basic- Operating System.

Vista was alright after all the patches and the first service pack, If you have a chance to get Windows 7, I would. So far it is awesome, but at this point in time you will not have a problem with Vista.

All in all, its not a bad computer, you might be able to do better but its not horrible like the other users are saying.

where to start.

2 GB Ram is basically the speed, basically, the more the better, 2 is normal but could be better

160 GB HDD is how much memory it has, 160GB is pretty good

intel core 2 processor is the brain of the computer

15.4" screen is the size of the screen from the bottom left corner to the top left corner

is plays dvds cds and burns them both also

warranties never hurt

web cams are fun, video you can shoot from your laptop

vista.... you can do with out, it crashes a lot and runs slow, if you get a new one, you might as well get a windows 7 computer

to tell you the truth, i bought this same computer a year ago, expect a compaq for $600.. i think you can do better. I would suggest a store like best buy... the people there (despite what you might think) are pretty well trained and can explain anything to you. And they are gonna have as low as a price as you can find brand new... and laptops under $900

2 GB RAM.....meh, ideally do better (the more of this you have the faster running multiple programs will be, and opening and closing programs)

160 GB HDD.....again...meh, ideally do better (where everything is kept such as programs, documents, music, pictures, etc....the closet of the computer, so naturally, bigger is better)

Intel core 2 Duo T6600 processor....not any slower than that, but ok (the "engine" of the computer, so the faster the better. I googled this processor and it was 2.2 GHz, which is decent, mine is 2.26 and I wish I had a slightly faster one, but its good enough)

15.4" screen....totally up to her. personally i prefer smaller but doesn't matter, its personal choice (self explanatory, as is the rest)

DVD/CD Player and burner....standard (could do better, but no big deal)

4 year warranty....i'm too cheap for warranty's but i also do my own repairs and maintenance, so probably good for her (depending how good the warranty is)

bluetooth and webcam....standard, good

vista.....fail

acer.....fail

$900....fail (for what it is)

It means its not a very good computer for $900.

I'd go with a HP or Dell if you want a PC.

That is a very Nice Laptop for just $200 more and it will last you much longer than the out-dated over-priced one you are looking at now.

This one is pretty good too if you are not looking to do any Gaming or Extreme Video editing....
