I am considering buying a mac for college, but I am thinking it would be wise to get one after Apple does all the major upgrades such as the new Mac OS X Lion. But I was wondering if it will be available on the new macs after the release of Mac OS X Lion.

Well, First off let me say/confirm that the cut off date to get a free upgrade to Mac OS X Lion is June 6, 2011. (Below I've included a link to Apple's OS X Lion Press release. Scroll down 2nd to last paragraph.) Now I must state that Mac OS X Lion IS considered to be a new "major" upgrade. The fact is to an average Mac user it doesn't seem like one since the UI for the most part hasn't dramatically changed for the past 2 upgrades. Nonetheless, its worthy and since its already past the 6th its free. NOTE: If you purchase a Mac before July's OS X Lion release be sure to register it when you get it(when you setup the Mac it will tell you to register) within a week.

Now Rernalda L is right about waiting as late as possible to purchase a New Mac since refreshes occur every few months. Below I've also included a link to a site that keeps track of each Mac Upgrade and estimates when the next will occur. It also states advice such as when its time to buy and when to hold off. If you are looking at a MacBook Air rumors have been circulating for next weeks release. If you're in the market for a Desktop the iMac was just updated. Everything else will be updated sometime between next week and, as Rernalda L stated, sometime in October.

I agree with everything mike said

But Lion is NOT a "major" upgrade, it is a 30 dollar interim upgrade. Both apple and microsoft usually give a "technology guarantee" that if you buy a unit after the cut off date, you get the next generation included.

One of the other guys posted that there was a june 6 cut off, but I think it will be more like june 10 when WWDC ends. He even posted a link, but the link was a bad link.

In any case, it is generally a good idea to wait as long as you can before buying a new computer. There is supposed to be a product refresh in October. If you are a college student you might not be able to wait till OCT.

The OS X Lion update will cost $29.99 USD, so while it will be "available" for you to purchase via the App Store or an Apple Store (for a physical copy), it will not be a free update. So, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take back the Macbook and wait for the update before you re-purchase it.

Note that depending on where you purchased the Macbook from, there may be a restocking fee that will likely exceed the $29.99 Lion Upgrade cost. Be sure to check with the store you purchased from about a potential fee before making your final decision.

To summarize: The update will be available for the Mac after release, however it will have a $29.99 cost associated with it.

Vista is a humorous tale; far too many issues it! i'm very aggravated simply by fact I paid plenty funds for a nil.5-baked product. i bought a MacBook a pair of weeks in the past, upgraded to Leopard some days in the past and that i actually like it! I used to think of Mac shoppers have been purely BS'ing whilst they pronounced Macs "purely artwork", even though it is actual. i've got used domicile windows all my existence yet i'm satisfied i've got finally considered the mild. OS X is the destiny; i'll purely use vista at artwork simply by fact I have no decision.
