I'm not sure if I should get a Mac or PC for college. I'm focusing mostly on math and science, and was wondering if a MacBook Pro would be fast enough and compatible enough.

I would suggest PC, only because MAC's are for people with technical and complex computer related jobs. It would be a waste of money for you to pay 2 grand on a MAC and barely use all the features. Plus your going to college, and most colleges today all have PC computer's with in their systems, and If your already use to MS word, powerpoint, excel, publisher etc., MAC word, excel and other programs is a huge adjustment to get use to.

Compatibility would be a bit of an issue with a Mac. You should consider this: do you want to run Mac OS and Mac-only applications? If the answer is not a "yes" then you should probably get a Windows-based PC as you'll get a lot more for your money.
PS - This argument of "best of both worlds" is nonsense. You don't pay the extra premium on a Mac to run Windows.

You're going to college. College costs a lot of money as it is. Why pay even more for a Mac, when for the same exact price, you could get a PC that leaves Macs in the dust?
There are also more programs and what-not available for PCs.
Also, regarding the virus argument, get an anti-virus program like Microsoft Security Essentials, scan often, and save yourself $500 by not getting a Mac.

It all depends on what you are looking for
Macbook pro on latest version works like a charm and you might need the extra battery power of about 3 hrs for class also very fast processor
windows notebooks are less safe security wise and tend to be a lot slower but their is a very helpful program for math called algebra solved! here is a link if you want to check it out.

All of the other math and science geeks will laugh at you if you have a Macbook.. Luckily, chicks will dig it if you invite them over to play with photobooth or something.

Mac because then you won't have to worry as much about viruses, and the battery is second to none.
