Apple stops adding incremental updates when a new major version of the operating system is released. You need to purchase OS X 10.6 snow leopard to get any further updates. Snow Leopards incremental updates will install the Mac App store onto your desktop. All releases of OS X beyond 10.6 require the Mac App store in order to install the operating system. Apple just put Snow Leopard back into the Apple online store to be available for purchase for about 30 dollars US. Later updates (lion and mountain lion) cost about the same, so it is not that expensive to get current.
Remember that Apple gave you 8 free updates with OS X 10.5. Some of those updates (10.5.3 for instance) made big changes under the hood that made your computer run faster and more efficiently. Had you been using a Windows based computer you would still be waiting for the same kind of functionality 5 or more years later. When Apple releases a major update, it really is a major update that is worth the money spent. Snow Leopard is a good case in point. It reduced the amount of physical memory it takes up on your hard drive by several gigabytes. It will also make your system scream compared to what you are using now. Even if you do not go beyond OS X 10.6, that version alone will make a huge difference to how you use your computer.

After a certain point apple will stop making software updates for older model Mac, Laptops, iPods, etc. So, it won't update.

it won't update because after a certain point apple will stop making software updates for older model Mac, Laptops, iPods, etc.
For example i have a second generation Ipod touch and i can't update the software because they stopped making it for that certain model.
