which laptop is best for a student?

Depends on what the student is studying. If there will be any intensive graphics courses then you will need a higher-end laptop or a Mac. If the student just needs the laptop for Word documents and surfing then almost all laptops will do with the possible exception of a chromebook. If the student needs some specialized software (e.g. for Computer Science you may need to run Visual Studio or various compilers/interpreters) I'd stick to a low level Windows machine like the HP Stream or the Asus X205TA. Their hard drive space is limited but can be expanded with an SD card or usb drives. They run at about the $180 - $220 range and seem more than sufficient for most students. They are also not too big so they are easy to carry around between classes.

When I was a student I had a large 15 inch dell laptop that weighed a ton, I later switched to a much cheaper netbook (an asus aspire one) which was much lighter and was more than sufficient for all of my needs. The main factors to consider are weight, performance and functionality. I think the asus or the HP Stream are the sweetspot for most students.

It is difficult to give you the best suitable answer for you because different people have different needs on the laptop.

If you just need a laptop strictly for studying (or working) purpose, no gaming, then any cheap Windows (7 onward) laptop would be fine. (Est. Within US$500)

However, if you also plan to use the laptop for some gaming to reduce stress, then a gaming laptop would be recommended if the games you play are video games or require heavy graphics (i.e. Grand Theft Auto V). (Est. At least US$1000)

Nonetheless, if the study (or work) laptop really uses a lot of things. Then good amount of RAM (to prevent laggings) and disk space (to store more files). But, rarely a student uses a lot of disk space, only teachers. So perhaps RAM is the important factor. (Est. Within US$1000)

Xtra: The difference between a student and a gaming laptop is that student laptop has lighter requirement since it does not need good processor and graphics/video card, thus, price usually cheaper while the gaming laptop usually requires good (and latest) processor, big amount of RAM and has (good) graphic/video card installed.

I used to work at a college and there simply is not enough information to really suggest anything. What type of student and what major? For instance If this student is on the IT path they may need a system that needs the power to run several virtual systems, programming applications, etc. etc. The student may not need a large system but may need a total power house so now your look at Processor power and speed, total ram, the ability to upgrade to a certain amount of ram, and obviously the ability to run all their software. Now this system can be anything from $350 (and this system will most likely need to be upgraded adding more) to $3000, it can be stacked from the store or upgraded.

For my legal students they may need a bigger system with a big monitor that they can put many documents on side by side. They may not need the processor speed but will need a good amount of RAM. SO you could be looking at $200 -$1000.

For my medical students most of their work can be done on an average system but they may need to carry their system around when they intern so I suggested something that was smaller and now I would direct them to a tablet rather than a laptop depending on more specifics. For instance a lot of software on says Windows/Macs may not work on any tablet as the operating system will be like Android or Surface. IPad seems to be better in terms of medical Citrix Cisco and a bunch of other big companies cater to them as this has become more popular with consumers.

SO on and So on with more information I’m sure we can help more but again there will always be preferences also which is why people yell out Macs, Chrome book, Dell, blah blah blah. As an individual maybe you only like Apple products which are much more expensive and typically less problematic but are not used as widely as Windows. They only update their system once a year leaving possible issues open for longer but windows actually has terror Tuesday’s where they push their updates to any system that allows them to without knowing (or caring) what effect that may have on end users. So with more info we can help you pick your poison.

My preference has always been Windows there is nothing you cannot do with any operating system now a days so that is my preference. I don’t like commercial Dells like say the latitudes always has issues for me but I like the Inspiron, but I also do not like AMD as much as I like Intel in terms of the processors. I also would not use windows 8 yet some software companies do even have stuff for it yet so I stick with Win7, now I am in IT and this is based solely on my experience with laptops, so many others would disagree. For instance Toshiba has very high ratings and seem well deserved but VIAO by Sony also has high ratings but both tend to be less efficient in the field for me but make a good personal laptop.

First off Dell and HP aren't laptops, those are manufacturers, and never in my life would I consider a macbook to be a 'high end' anything. It all depends on what you're doing but avoid macbooks at all cost, biggest rip-off that exists in the computer world.

This is so subjective and relies more on opinion than fact.

The better the laptop the more you are going to shell out for it. You always get what you pay for and most makers buy their motherboards in huge quantities from the same venders.

The better, more quality the motherboard the more the price goes up

Get an Used laptop if you can find between 11 inch to 13 inch screen size for good portability and it can do your everyday tasks like using office, presentation, excel and using internet browser

or get a Chromebook as they are cheaper as I have heard. maybe you can install Linux on it anyways

For a student, I think a Mac Air book would be fit because it's light to carry, fast, and top pick for mini laptops. I would also recommend a chrome book. I think Apple products are easy, fast, and productive, so maybe one of the Apple laptops would be fine for a student, especially in college.

Im in 7th grade all advanced classes (lots of APA papers ugh) and I have a 11.6" Macbook Air. I cant bring it to school but when I write at home I can save it easily and it travels lightly. I travel around the US alot for family purposes and I have been loving this laptop and its not big and bulky. Students shouldn't game on laptops. If your not a tech person like me then here is a simple way of saying it, a desktop has a monitor like a tv and a tower that gives it power. laptops are basically small towers connected to a monitor so it really depends on your purpose and what you major in (if your in college).
