I have been using macs since 1993 and have owned at least 14 different macs and used many others (desktops and laptops 5 of which I still own one of which is from 1996 that came from a school and still runs great) over the years and have had as far as I can remember two serious problems. Once many many many years ago with an early G3 we had for several years, the hard drive crashed and then a little more recently the mother board had some issues but the hard drives where fine and everything but since the computer was 5 years old and we needed an upgrade we switched instead of replacing the motherboard. As a graphic designer I needed the upgrade.

I have never had a virus and the one virus I do remember was one you had to download and install yourself.

Macs have always been easy to use and operate easily customizable and great for gaming, graphics and anything else you throw at it. Plus with OS-X you can go deeper so if you just want simplicity you have it but you also have that option of delving deeper into the system.

I have used PCs and usually they are slow and just buggy and have all sort of problems. Some are decent and get the job done but I just never feel good about Windows and the Bill Gates Monopoly. Linux is a cool idea and I like open source software and ideals but all in all I think Macs are just generally better built better operating machines. They are fun and functional as more than just a doorstop as some PCs have been.

Apple has always been on that cutting edge of designing great new products. Microsoft always seem to struggle to catch up. Without Apple we probably wouldn't be here right now answering questions over the internet. They brought computing to the masses and then brought portable a computing to the masses and so many other great products.

Now saying all this great stuff I will say I think Steve Jobs is taking the company in a wrong direction and needs to get more focus on their computers and maybe bring back "the Woz" but that is all a separate issue.

In the end it's up to you but..

Protection and safety - Mac is better. It's less prone to viruses. There simply aren't that many Mac viruses around, but any good anti-virus program will protect a Windows machine. I've been using various computers for a long time and only ever had two viruses on a Windows machine. One was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xelN2qBzvzQ in the late 80's or early 90's and the other was because one of my nephews turned off the antivirus protection then downloaded some crap from a P2P network.

Range of programs - Windows

Upgradability - Windows

Looks Good - Mac

System stability - about the same. Don't get carried away with the thought that Macs are crashproof, they are not. Older versions of Windows used crash, mostly due to memory problems, but it's rare for XP or anything newer to crash.

Capabilites - about the same. Windows and Macs use more or less the same hardware. Some people still insist that Macs are better for multimedia work but they are living in the past. Macs used to be built with fast (for the time) SCSI drives and a Motorola RISC processor especially designed for multimedia work. Motorola just couldn't keep up with Intel and so Apple started using their chips about 10 years ago.

Games- If you're a serious gamer then you need Windows

This argument has been going on for nearly 30 years (along with the Linux thing) and the only reason it's still continuing is because there is no clear cut answer. Just go with the one you want and get the best you can afford.

For me, PC is far superior to Mac.

1) Better for gaming

2) More computer for the money

3) I heavily prefer Windows to Mac OS X

4) Microsoft embraces developers. Apple screws over developers.

5) More available software

6) More available hardware

7) Can repair and upgrade myself (even build my own!)

8) Better for office productivity (and students)

9) Just as good for multimedia

There are probably other reasons, but that's just what I came up with off the top of my head.

Macs are just like any other laptop. There is no amazing technological breakthrough that makes them superior. If you compare a Macbook or even the Macbook Pro to any other brand laptop you will find that they aren't better performance wise and you can find both Macs and PCs that do the same thing.

In fact, my laptop I purchased is an HP and it has better specs. than a Macbook and cost me 1/3 of the price. the whole Mac vs PC argument is just one giant attempt to build support, and more importantly, a market base for both platforms.

Macs are like a toy boat you drive by poking the near of it with a stick. Sure, it kind of goes where you want and does sort of what you want it to... but not really well.
