I've got a PC with windows xp home edition on which I access the Internet (obviously)
My son has recently purchased one of these

The laptop on the link above is wireless enabled....We wish to access the Internet via a wireless connection at home......will we need a USB to recieve Internet or will the wireless connection on the laptop be enough?
If we buy a wireless modem router would we need to install it onto both machines or just my PC?
My son's laptop has Windows Vista installed BTW.....The routers we've been looking at don't specify compatibility with windows vista.....please help....so confusing to me. Thanks guys.

You'll need a wireless router for your modem to go through so your PC is connected to the Internet and so a signal is beamed out to the laptop. As for specifications for Vista - the wireless set up should be straight forward, all you need to check for is what type of wireless the router is (in terms of lettering- it'll be 108e, b or g etc) and even this is pretty standardised. One thing you will need to do however is make sure the wireless connection is secured though, otherwise you'll have neighbours pitching your bandwidth!

All you need is to get a wireless modem router. Your son's laptop is fully wireless ready. Either contact your ISP for a router (they sometimes provide one for free or at least at a discounted rate). Or a decent wireless router can cost as little as £40 on the net or £60 in a store on the high street.

As for Vista compatability - it won't be a problem as its a standardised wireless signal that will be used. All you'll end up with is the Wireless router connected to your computer (like your current modem is) and wirelessly connected to the laptop.

Yeah you need a wireless router for your pc which will pick up your son's laptop. little hint tho i just got a laptop and on most of them there is a little switch on the side or front which you need to switch so the laptop can accept wireless connection. Think its a security feature but i didnt have a clue and was trying for hours til my lil bro told me!!

if you have bt internet get the homehub, we have one in the living room and i use the wireless on my laptop to access the internet via it, all you have to do is install the software on the laptop and then it will pick up the homehub, also there is a security feature where when u first install it on the laptop you need to enter a code from the bottom of the homehub so that random people cant access your internet connection via their wireless

hope this helps

Best get one from you internet supplier, then you don't need to worry about things like is it ADSL or DSL or NAT and stuff like that. (NAT splits your IP address after it reaches your home so you can have multiple connections from the one IP address)

I'm with Virgin and they've gven me a DSL connection - that's one that doesn't share the telephone line but has it's own cable. (ADSL shares a telephone line with your phone using a splitter)

Virgin supply a DSL wireless router for about £25 (about the same for ADSL). You should also get yourself a wireless card for your pc so you don't have to worry about trailing wires.

most wireless routers come with network sockets, youll need a patch lead to go from the router to your pc
