My mum wants a laptop that she can use for the internet, and perhaps microsoft office, but that's all.
I know it won't need lots of memory, but it will need a reasonable sized screen.
She'd be happy with a second hand one if she knew it would last.
Any suggestions on the most reliable yet cheap ones

dell vostro A860 is a decent machine for the money. I bought one for my M-I-L for Christmas just for internet and word processing and its more than she'll ever need. it cost right at 400 incl shipping

Good and cheap do not go together with new laptops. For what your mum wants to do there is, in fact, a completely perfect answer. Buy a good second hand IBM Thinkpad T41, 42 or 43. These machines are specifically built for long life office use. No good for gaming but for what your mum wants they are superb (as they should be as they cost around 1500 new!) Every part is easily replaceable and they last and last. She should be able to pick up a good T42 for around £150 on ebay with just a touch of patience. Keep your eye out for private sellers, dont go to the many large refurbishers. These lappies have THE best keyboard of any laptop and are probably the longest lasting as well. I have a current T61, my eldest son now has my previous T60, my younger son has my prior to that T42 and my wife has a T30 i passed on years back. None have given any trouble. These are top of the heap lap tops that make most others look like flimsy toys but are built specifically for office use are not suited to gamers.

I got for xmas the dell inspiron 1525. It only cost €495.00 and was a bargain. It's the best laptop i ever have and for a brand name as good as dell, i thought i saved a fortune!!

You could get a Net-book. It is like a laptop but smaller, it doesn't have much memory but is great for searching the net. You can get them for under £200 - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0189043062.1233002538@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadegflifheecflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=705895&category_oid=

The cheapest type of computer/laptop is Ei System, they are not very good for multitasks but complete all your Computing needs. They are a little bigger than a net-book - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0189043062.1233002538@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadegflifheecflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=919905&category_oid=-35054
