I am looking to upgrade to a new computer next year and all my friends tell me I should switch to a MAC. I now that they are less susceptible to viruses, etc. Besides this, what makes it a better choice over a Windows PC? I am wondering if there will be a problem transferring the content from my WINDOWS PC to the MAC Computer.I am not a techie so I apologize in advance if I sound ignorant on this question Thanks for any info.

Myths:

1. Macs are less susceptible to viruses. It's a lie. Any system can be broken. It's just that the main target has been Windows, because it's the leader in number of users. When and if Mac OS beats Windows in popularity - it will be the other way around. Meanwhile several antivirus companies already published antivirus programs for MAC.

2. Macs are more stable. Windows 7 has no stability issues (When you don't use third party software).

3. Macs are best for designers. Not any more. Adobe seems to prefer Microsoft more now. Some designers I know reported that Adobe CS5 is more feature-rich on Windows than on Mac (small stuff, but it counts).

4. Macs have better hardware. Well, it's a yes and no. Apple does BUY some of the best hardware, adds some 50% to the price and sells it to the end user. Its hardware is the same Samsung, AMD, Intel, nVidia as everywhere else. It's screen on the Macs is what makes the difference. They use a SIPS matrix, which allow crazy viewing angles without color distortion. Drawbacks - immense price, and slow response time (slower than regular, TN matrix). And Dell has models with similar matrix. Though I advise the use of MVA or PVA screens, which are priced somewhere in the middle, have good viewing angles and good response times.

5. No wires. It's also a lie. Many vendors (like Dell, HP, Acer, and more) also offer computers with various configurations, where you get a large screen, which is the computer itself. It goes with a wireless mouse and keyboard. Dell even comes with a touch screen. Neat, ha?

Pros:

1. Packed with the top-end hardware. It's true. You won't find anywhere else the most expensive monitor, the most expensive CPU(s), the most expensive HDD, etc, packed together into one single small PC. The question is do you really need this?

2. Less mallware that exists at the moment. It's true, but mallware still exists. You are just less likely to get it if you're using a Mac.

Cons:

1. Price. No comment. Everything is overpriced.

2. Monopolization. Once you bought something from them, they own you, until you throw it away.

3. Poorer GUI than on Windows 7 or Linux Ubuntu

4. No Cut+Paste in file namager.

5. Less software available.

Where does it leave you?

Apple has been leading a VERY aggressive marketing campaign against Microsoft during the last years. This has shown its effects. People who simply want to use computers, go out there to buy a Mac, because they at least know the brand, because it's not some kind of Chinese Japanese brand. In fact, a Mac will give you very few hardware advantages like no wires.... aaaand that's about it... After all, the other brands (HP, Acer, Dell, etc) also offer all-in-one PCs. Though you will spend much less, and get a lot more powerful computer if you buy a regular tower connected to a monitor.

What's great about PC, is that it leaves you choice about vendors. If you don't like one vendor - move to another (competition also means lower prices). If you use a Mac, you've only got one vendor. The same goes for software. You'll have exactly 0 problems installing a free Linux Ubuntu operating system, and 0 problems installing a Windows 7 operating system. Great? Ha?

Quality: Apple is poorer quality than most Windows PC manufacturers, but better than a few. Price: You can pay less for a computer not build by Apple, but you can't get much worse. Viruses: Computers that can run programs can get viruses. The claim that Macs are less susceptible to viruses is nonsense. Macs get Mac viruses, Windows machines get Windows viruses. (Linux computers don't get either one.) The single most devastating virus ever unleashed was a *nix virus, and Mac OSX is a Unix variant. Upgrading: If Apple doesn't make or approve it, you can't get it for a Mac. Hundreds of large companies (and many more smaller ones) make upgrades for Windows computers. Repairs: With a Mac you almost always have to go to the Apple stopr (or to Apple, or to someone who will ship the computer to Apple, like Best Buy). There are VERY few independent repair shops that will bother with a Mac. Windows? Many high school kids can fix Windows PCs, and there are thousands of independent shops. Software: There's nothing you can do on a Mac that you can't do on Windows. There's plenty you can do on Windows that you can't do on a Mac. Bottom line: The ONLY reason to buy a Mac is to spend more money. It's NOT better for graphics or sound (this is 2011, not 1985, when that was true). It's NOT better for viruses. (You can't break your dorsal fin and a fish can't get pneumonia - that's due to inherent differences, not "better".) It's not better hardware - in most cases it's hardware that's not as good. It's not innovation - the cheapest, smallest, fastest, most powerful - in short the "most" or "est" computer in any category, except most expensive - is NOT an Apple. Sorry, but there's nothing good to say about Macs if you compare them to Windows PCs. (Macs are better than Etch-A-Sketch, but that's not the area you're looking for.)

If rest of your life, you wanna keep paying much higher price for low tech computer than go ahead keep taking the easier choice and get a mac. yes it is more secured but have you ever thought that why it is more secured???

answer is simple....... no one gives a damn about mac. cause practically no one uses them. As much as there is myth that a lot of business run apple stuff, they dont. And since no one is using them, no hacker etc. care about making anything to screw up the software. That is why it is safe.

If you apply same restrictions to yourself while using pc, it will be safe too. dont download crap from torrents. dont go to porn sites and for god sake learn a little about safe use of pc. Not being techie is lame excuse for not willing to learn.

Pros:

* inherently more secure. The vast majority of Mac users don't need to use anti-virus software. Practically no viruses in 10 years (thanks to rock solid UNIX under the hood).

* its easier to get stuff done. you won't have to relearn everything every time there is an upgrade.

* Amazing attention to detail. Laptop hard drives that lockdown mid-flight, magnetic power-cord adaptors that don't take the computer with it when the cable is kicked.

* way more durable. Macs are legendary for lasting for years and years while your typical PC is on a continual upgrade cycle from using cheap and nasty components. PCs rarely last more than a couple of years without some important component dying on you.

* they do windows too (natively and virtually).

* greenest computers available. They use materials that are recyclable and re-useable so your grand-kids wont suffer for decisions you make today.

* the best value computer money can buy. The cost of owning a mac over its lifetime is a pittance compared to your average PC.

* they hold their value long after they are designated obsolete.

* it never crashes. Individual programs can die on you, but OS X wont let one program take out another or the entire operating system.

* You only ever see error messages when there is a real problem, and when you do they are in plain english.

* Sleep mode works

* Dead easy to setup and get connected to the internet.

* the Mac applications store (coming in January).

* Less bloat and more efficient use of the hardware.

* bundled apps are full featured and useful

* no trialware, demos or other crud littering the desktop when you first start it up.

* best post purchase support in the business

* Apple is the fastest growing computer maker today. They will be around long after the fat lady has sung and gone home.

* There is only one version of OS X you need to buy, Windows comes in a confusing barrage of different version all with different limitations. OS X upgrades come more often at half the price of Windows ones. Mac upgrades add value to the experience of using your Mac and often make it feel "snappier".

* Aluminium cases won't crack or turn yellow with age.

* Mac laptops are lighter, smaller and easier to lug around with more power to boot.

* target disk mode.

* systemwide searches are faster and can find anything.

* automatic backups that can pull anything from anywhere from anytime.

* better synching with smartphones and mobile devices.

Cons:

* OS X is not windows. Yes you will have to adjust to doing things in different ways, a different interface and design philosophy.

* Apple doesn't really cater for the shoestring budgets.

* You upgrade a Mac every several years (in one hit) instead of incrementally as PCs do.

* You can't legally build your own Mac.

* Industry specific niche software may never become available on the Mac. Counterpoint: but you can run it within Windows or Virtually within OS X.

* computer games come out on Windows first before Mac. Counterpoint: The Mac versions are better tested and include more tweaks. Consoles (Xbox, Playstation, Wii) get games before Windows.

* sticker shock. PC users accustomed to paying a pittance up front get a shock at the initial price of a Mac.

* Apple may not make a Mac specifically for what you want. For instance you can't buy a mini tower Mac or a netbook (counterpoint: MacBook air fills that role better and more powerfully).

* incremental Mac upgrades (graphics cards etc) can be pricey or not even available.

* Apple doesn't support legacy Mac's indefinitely. They continually push the envelope and sometimes they freak everyone out by no long supporting long standing venerable hardware. Apple in previous years has moved on from using floppy drives, hard-drives (slowly moving to SSDs) all kinds of different port types (parallel, serial, firewire 400), CRTs, PowerPC processors, Motorola 68k processors, even CD drives (macbook air).

* you can't buy a Mac with a Blue-Ray drive (counterpoint: but you can get an external plug in one).

* Only one vendor of Macs - Apple. Counterpoint: PCs have very little to differentiate themselves from each other and are in a race to the bottom. Innovation is a dirty word.

Pro: more aesthetically pleasing. Cons: you can modify windows to have the same effects as a Mac. Also, it's less compatible with programs.
