The MacBook Pro is an excellant notebook, especially for people who want to do video or sound editing, anything like that. They are out of my price range, i only have the 24 inch imac, but i love it, and the new operating system of Snow Leopard is great, Makes them even more efficent and faster. Another good idea if you do get one, go the extra mile and buy an applecare protection plan from apple, not best buy, and get 3 years of phone support and 3 years of hardware protection. It is a well spent 349.00. But, a tip, it does not cover accidental damage. Dropping it, dropping on it, spilling liquid, pop im sure, etc. Most people in your sons field that do those types of serious usage with computers typically get macs because they are well known for their quality. And you really don't need internet or virus protection every year because they are almost completely safe. Never had a problem with a virus on mine or the one before it, or in the 5 years I was an applecare technician for apple. So that is saying something,

Quick answer: absolutely! A Macbook is great!

Long answer: for 6th grade, a Macbook Pro might be an overkill; a simple Macbook 13" might do the job. (see link below)

I guess the right question to ask yourself it: is this going to be used for class? If so, does he have any requirements? If there are no Windows requirements, then a Macbook is great. It's virtually virus free, it's secure, and you can actually setup parental control to limit daily usage, sites that he can access, and so on, depending on your degree of control desired.

The Macbook will be more expensive than a Windows laptop, but in my opinion, it's much more and a Windows laptop. It's really great!

Good luck!

A Mac e book professional for a 6th grader? WOW! on a similar time as its no longer required, i could enable him difficult it out till it fairly is needed. it is an fee which may be stored. Now whilst its required for him to have a working laptop or computing gadget, then you definately can likely get a extra effective MacBook for the money. If he needs something to play video games, get him a Wii, he can particular the internet utilising the loose internet Channel receive and keep you some $1K. That way you may video reveal his use, in case you place it in a public section, and it will get extra use out of the Wii. relatively if he could be utilising that effective macbook getting used basically for facebook, myspace, pogo, nickjr, and different web sites. Macs are large machines for the Musically and Digitally inventive human beings. in case you basically wanna play internet video games, get a netbook. in case you elect to play picture in intensity video games, you're able to probably do extra effective with a working laptop or computing gadget costs smart, because of the fact comparable MACs are lots extra high priced. wish this helps

Well, if he's computer savvy, I would think he'd want a PC. PCs are excellent for savvy users as they allow more functionality, especially where programming and stuff is concerned.

But it's really your call. I mean, he is your son. Does he deserve it? Will it benefit him in the long run or will he break it easily? Will he grow out of it quickly? I mean, macs are horribly expensive. It might not be a bad idea to get something more reasonably priced that he can tinker with. That way when it breaks, it won't be such a big deal.

But it's your call. It could be his b-day gift or a X-mas present.

I would say get him one. He seems to have an interest in computers. Macbooks are awesome and well worth the money. If it seems to expensive you can always see about getting him a macbook instead of a macbook pro. They are a bit cheaper and still an excellent machine. Don't get him a PC...

If he's really tech savvy, then sure. Like the other user said, he should earn it. Give it to him for a special occasion or have him work for it. He could do his own tech show on youtube! I know of a lot of kids who do that. Just be sure that he is responsible enough to take care of it. I've seen a lot of spoiled brats with expensive computers that they don't know how to use doing tech shows too.

Hello,

Mac's have been the frontline for multimedia, such as you have described him doing. It will be perfect. Perhaps we will read about him on Wikipedia like the Industrial Light & Magic people from the short clips listed below;

Adobephoto Shop

In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image editing program. Thomas took a six month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which had been renamed ImagePro.[4] Later that year, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program with a slide scanner; a "total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped" this way.[5]

During this time, John traveled to Silicon Valley and gave a demonstration of the program to engineers at Apple Computer Inc. and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. Both showings were successful, and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988.[4] While John worked on plug-ins in California, Thomas remained in Ann Arbor writing program code. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 for Macintosh exclusively.[6]

Industrial Light & Magic

It was in the late 1980s when Adobe Photoshop made its first appearance on the world stage. It was used at the Industrial Light & Magic studios as an image-processing program. Photoshop was created by ILM Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll and his brother Thomas as a summer project.

Adam Savage, Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci of Mythbusters fame have all worked at Industrial Light & Magic.

Industrial Light & Magic is also famous for their commercial work. Their clients include Energizer Holdings, Nike, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Budwiser and other companies.

ILM is also the largest voice recording studio. It is used for anime dubbing and non anime voice work.

i would think so if he enjoys video compilations and creating technical things. macs are great for that sort of stuff, but don't just give it to him, make him earn it, like for a special occasion or good grades or even house chores. just make sure he always has is eye or hands on it to prevent theft at school, even with elementary kids, or even the teacher might want one instead of their crappy computers.

It sounds like he's ready for one. The only major concern is theft since they're easy to grab. If you can be sure that it will be safe, go for it.
