Depending on how much RAM you have installed, any 32-bit Linux distribution would work. Something with a lightweight desktop environment, like Xfce or Fluxbox, would feel the snappiest. Keep in mind that the processor is really too weak to properly run modern versions of Firefox, and Google Chrome no longer supports 32-bit processors at all. So regardless of what operating system you choose, you probably won't be doing much web browsing on it.

MX Linux (uses Xfce) and antiX (uses Fluxbox) would be good choices for Linux distros.

If you just want to play games on it, then a minimal install of Windows XP is still your best option.

For a laptop, I would run Linux Mint Mate.  You can run the 64 bit version.  Mate is a very small footprint and seems to support laptops well.

Although other distros will work fine, you will find that some laptop functions won't work right without a bit of work, like suspend/hibernate and power options.

If you want windows XP or 2000. Neither of these is supported by MS any more. Valid copies can some times be purchased on e-bay. Support for anti-virus might be limited so I would suggest it might be a good computer for work/games that does not require the internet. That is provided the programs to be run do not require a newer OS.

Probably ubuntu LTS, it is an alternative to windows OS and it will do most things that windows does such as internet browsing, social media, playing music, videos, office based tasks
