laptop stolen, way to track if they use internet?

Question

I want to at least ask if it can be tracked.......being the forever "won't happen to me", I had several pictures not saved, now lost, ......well, just so much was taken when they walked out with that Computer.......any suggestions?

Only way would be to sniff out its mac address if its wireless and if you have a copy of the address. That would be a great undertaking in a large community. Anyone who has a brain would use mac spoofing tho. I.E. thats your only (and almost impossible) method. You would have to comb your area with a program called netstumbler and hope you see the address.No an ip address wont work! IP addys change depending on whatever network they are tied to.

MAC address. It's way more reliable than tracing Ip, because MAC is special to your PC. Good that it's a laptop, because it might say something on the user manuals about it's specifications (mine does). If you have a USB drive that has a file that was last used on the laptop, there is such a thing as data remanence. The following is CSI-style, so this is a bit trickier. Go to a data recovery lab to recover PC information on the file (this is possible because of OS timestamping), and have a private investigation.

not really, besides filing a police report. they will most likely try to sell it, check local second hand computer stores and craigslist. unless you installed tracking software prior to the theft there really isn't much you can do. Unless you use an online service that logs your ip when you go online and automatically starts, (like an online game) in which case you could see if he logged in accidentally as you and get the ip address, which will tell if if its in the same town, or if he is using a proxy then you're really screwed/ good luck/

The only way I know of tracking is if you happen to know your IP address other than that, no way.

see u can track ur laptop if u remeber ur laptops ip address........

if they use internet...u can contact ur server administrator and immediately locate them..u can even disable them from using the internet....



BUT ALL U NEED TO REMEMBER IS THE LAPTOPS IP ADDRESS!!!!!

Its called lo-jack, and if you didnt register it before it was stolen, its gone.
