Are there any error messages or pop-up screens could possibly be malware or a virus?

I would do these things in this order

1)reboot - ie. switch off and restart - you can force a shutdown by holding the power button down for 20sec - if that doesn't work

2)system restore first and see if that works if not

3) then a factory restore,

To do a factory restore reboot press F8 just after the HP splash screen and choose repair and follow the prompts, you will lose all you personal data and will have to reinstall any additional programs

4) If non of these methods work then ring HP support

If you have the Operating System disks you can also try a Windows Repair. Insert the disks and unplug it and pull the battery out to get it to shut off. When you power it up again hit any button to get it to Start From CD (it will prompt you). After it is done analyzing your setup select Repair an installation and then it will take you to a black command screen. There I believe the command you use is FIXBOOT but I believe if you type HELP it will give you a list of all the commands you use.

Of course backup all of your important work before you do this. I don't believe a FIXBOOT will delete your data because it is only working on the Windows installation and not your saved files but don't quote me on that.

Scan and clean it with free Super AntiSpyware software.
