You're running 10.5.4, yes? If so, boot from the installation DVD or an external HDD or USB drive with OS X installed and check /Library/Logs/PanicReporter for the log file. Look at "BSD process name corresponding to current thread" and see if there's a particular kext that's causing the problem Many kexts are version specific so if you updated to a new version of OS X but it's still trying to load a kext made for an older version, there can be problems such as kernel panics.

What you may want to do is try booting in safe mode. It's not as though it hurts anything even if it doesn't work, so it's worth trying. Hold the command key and the s key to boot into single user mode. At the darwin boot prompt simply type "-v -x" and hit enter. Don't actually type the quotation marks though. Safe mode only loads the bare minimum kexts required to boot. -x makes you boot into safe mode while -v is just verbose mode, which means that it displays all the files that it's loading instead of displaying the usual grey spinning icon. It's just useful to be able to see what's going on when you're trying to figure out what's causing a problem.

If you're not running 10.5 check here for the location of the log: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546

hazard-unfastened mode is a diagnostic mode for subject-taking photographs what's incorrect at the same time alongside with your gadget. The kernel panic is genuinely the placement the working gadget had a catastrophic crash and had to close down. as quickly as you have exchange into those, some subject has boost into corrupted indoors the working gadget records, or possibly with the easy actuality that there is a hardware subject. the reason you're getting no sound is possibly by way of actuality the diagnostic mode will rather enable the bare minimum hardware to make it much less complicated to treatment the subject. the prospect-unfastened mode isn't meant for well-known utilization (eg. listening to song in iTunes), rather prognosis and fasten. Do you have get precise of get entry to to on your Mac installation discs? One decision precise that's to reinstall the working gadget. this might treatment the subject no remember if this is a corruption of one or better working gadget records that's inflicting the subject, as quickly as you will attempt this, you're waiting to shrink returned up all your records and records to an outdoors disc or discs (DVD-R or annoying disk rigidity) as they are going to be wiped from the gadget. If following a restoration of the working gadget, you're nevertheless having subject concerns, then i'm afraid this is possibly which you have a hardware subject and you will might desire to seek for help from Apple help. wish this records facilitates.

Did you just run an update? That panic usually shows up after a botched one. To be on the safe side, reset the SMC (look up the procedure for your model on Apple's site) and see if it happens again. If so, boot up from the original restore discs and run the diagnostic by holding the D key when you hear the chime. If everything comes out okay, reinstall the OS.
