Question:
USB not working anymore?

I own an Acer Aspire 7736ZG. A couple of days ago I dropped my laptop on the carpet from about 50cm. "Nothing happened to the laptop! Thanks God!", I said, but yesterday I realized that from 4 USB ports only 1 works. I tried them with a printer, a usb stick and a phone, and they worked only in a port. In 2 ports the led of the stick starts flashing very quickly, and normally it wouldn't flash that quickly. Everything else works, including Ethernet, bluetooth, wifi and CD-ROM.

So, do you know how to make the ports work again without going to the computer service?
Thanks a lot! Eduard

Without having specific detail about your hardware, I can only offer basic suggestions. I've separated them into two categories; simple and difficult;

----------

Simple

----------

- Test your USB flash drive in all ports. Make sure the LED flashes on all of them. This assures that the USB ports are functional. Then check to see if the drive is visible on your laptop.

- Go into the Windows Control Panel and direct yourself to the System icon. Then get yourself into the Device Manager. Observe any anomalies, including marked items in the list. If there are any, make a note of them.

- Test a different USB device. It may be a faulty flash drive so just to make sure that it isn't, try something else.

- If the problem persists and your laptop is still under warranty, RMA it.

-----------

Difficult

-----------

- There could be a physical fault which you will be unable to repair yourself. If you're out of warranty, you're in trouble. The shop may not be able to repair it themselves as these things are dealt with by the manufacturer, but the salesman will take care of all that for you but at a cost.

- If you're out of warranty, contact the manufacturer of the laptop who will be able to arrange to pick it up and fix it. This is the most costly solution.

- A very simple and cheap solution would be to buy a small 4-port USB hub for the one working USB port. It's easy to install but it's difficult to place when using the laptop on the move.

I hope this helps.

First try unplugging and removing the battery, press the power button for five seconds. Leave it for two minutes and try the USB again.

If that doesn't work...

Restart in Safe Mode*

Open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

Double click Universal Serial Bus Controllers/USB Root Hub (X Ports). Right click each instance underneath and uninstall the drivers. Don't worry, Windows will re-build them.

Restart normally and try again.

*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 (be aware that some manufacturers use F8 for system recovery!) then use arrow keys to highlight 'Safe Mode with networking' and hit Enter/Return, click on a user account, enter the Administrator password (if you don't know it, there probably isn't one so leave it blank) and hit Enter/Return.
