Is anyone having CAPS LOCK problems on an HP Pavilion dv5000? How did you fix it?

I have an HP Pavilion dv5000 notebook (only 3 months old). Lately, I've been having rare instances of Caps Lock/mouse problems. When Caps Lock is on, the type is in lower-case, and when Caps is off, the type is upper-cased. Regardless of the case, the top row of numbers types only the symbols. It's as if the computer is in a constant shift mode. This happens regardless of what I'm doing: writing html code, e-mail, forums, etc.

My mouse is acting strange as well - left-clicking doesn't (one click will select everything in a folder/page/document. The mouse wheel isn't scrolling up or down, but acts as back/forward in a browser. Right-click works fine, though.

Restarting the PC fixes it, but I don't want to run into this problem again. Any help would be appreciated. (I called Tech Support and they only directed me to do things I already knew how to do).

The problem you are having is actually in the keyboard driver. I had the same thing happen to mine, and I only bought it 6 days ago. The driver for the keyboard is incorrect. So, it must be deleted and reinstalled. I contacted HP Real-time Chat tech support and this is what they told me to do. It actually worked.

Rinstalling Keyboard:

1. Restart the system and press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu. Ignore any error messages that occur.

2. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press Enter.

3. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then System icon.

4. This opens the System properties window.

5. Select Hardware tab and click Device Manager.

6. Click the plus (+) sign next to Keyboard to list the keyboard drivers.

7. Select one driver and click Remove. At the warning prompt, click OK.

8. Repeat this process until there is no listing for keyboard. 9. Close all windows and restart the computer.

After you have restarted, Windows will automatically detect and reinstall the drivers. Then, you will be prompted to restart again. After you do this, it should be fine.

Good Luck!

Seek warranty service right away. You can plan on your computer being away for 5 to 7 days. Contact HP right away and get it sent back. They use express shipping services, so you could be back in action fairly fast.

Yup, HP is awesome in their warranty. Give them a call and they will send you a Fedex prepaid box, you ship your Laptop and they return it in like 1-2 weeks and all for free.
