Well 1st I could care less about this point system I'm just here to help. So I don't care if I get best answers or not. Putting that aside... Macintosh is always the best bet. You can go cheaper and get a PC but you'll be fitting viruses etc, constantly. I have 3 PCs and 1 Mac. PCs always have problems. Mac has never had problems. This is especially important if you're a student. You could lose valuable documents you need to pass classes, etc. So PCs although are cheaper just are worth the risk. Kind of like trying to get to the moon with a rocket but you have to sit on the outside. Just is not smart money. But if cheap is what you need look at the new minis $300 to $400 gets the job done. Just hope you never lose important information. Get the best virus protection you can find. Don't rely on Microsoft. They put out software before the bugs are taken care of. Good luck little one. Now go and be like sunshine.

Macbook.

Unless he has a specific need for Windows (and even then, you can run Windows on the Mac either in dual-boot mode with BootCamp or via a virtual machine emulator like Parallels or the free VirtualBox), the Mac is a very good machine for many people, with much less maintenance than is required on a Windows computer.

UPDATE:

Or an Asus EeePC or other netbook, like the Wind or Dell's new Minispiron (or whatever it's called). You sacrifice a bit of functionality for less weight and smaller size and less expense. Google for "netbook" for more info.
