The cheapest plan it is a $15 a month + tax.by DSL.

All the laptops comes with a wireless card. once you get the the internet service you have to buy a router that cost between $30 t0 $50, you also can ask to the telephone company that you have to see if they have an offer of a 30 days free and a moden/router included in the offer.

Sometimes they have those offer, in case they don't you can ask for a free modem/router. I'm sure they'll give it to you instead of loosing a new customer.

Good luck.

You probably want to get a laptop with an internal modem so it's wifi ready. If you currently have a home internet service provider than all you will need is a "wireless router" to set up a home network. If you buy a router, there will be full instructions to set up the network. There are a number of internet providers on the market that will try to sell you wireless internet service, but like I said you probably just want to get a wireless router. Here's a couple links where you can sort of compare your options:

Wireless routers (assuming you already have a home internet provider)

As far as laptops go, it's really about how much you want to spend and what type of activities your son does on the internet. You can usually find a cheap quality laptop at dell.com where they spell out the features clearly.

if he's at home working on it, the cheapest thing to do is buy a wireless router for about $50-60 and hook it up to the internet connection you already have. the better ones can have up to 16 computers on the internet at once. you'll have to configure the pc you already have to the router. the geek squad at best buy will do this for about $50 extra when you buy the router. GREAT INVESTMENT! any hp's with 3-4GB of hard drive space and 250GB of RAM or memory are good. also try to get one with a 17" screen. You can get one like this that also has a web camfor about $700 at best buy. you can also use a wireless connection like that for free at a library or some cafes or coffee shops. or you can go to verizon wireless and get an internet card for $60 a month.

if you want it anywhere you need a card from a cell phone carrier. They charge $60 a month, plus a couple hundred up front to get started.

Wi-fi is built into the laptop, so that's another story. Wi-fi runs on the same band your cordless phone does, and it has a similar range, about 300-500 feet from the base. It needs to be within earshot of a base, or hotspot, to work. You can find hotspots at restuarant's, libraries, hotels, and other public places. You can turn your house into a hotspot by getting yourself a router and internet service from the phone or cable companies. They can set up a router for you, or you can buy one at the store. I would just let the comapny you get your internet to set it up. Let them worry about it. If you have cable or DSL internet now, you are all ready halfway there. You just need a router.

Pretty much all new notebooks come with built in wireless capabilities. Most newer models come with 802.11 N, but some older models come with 802.11 B and/or G. Which standard it uses really isn't that important, but making sure the wireless router you get is compatible with that standard is(ie. If you get a notebook that uses 802.11 N and you purchase an 802.11 b/g router they won't work together).

When choosing the notebook it is really important to know what your son intends to use it for. There are several possible uses to consider:

Surfing the internet - If your son only wants to surf the Internet and run a few light applications, then a Netbook would be perfect. They are priced between $250-500.

Gaming - Typical gaming applications require more resources than standard computers, so its a good idea to purchase a more powerful machine. If you are budget-minded, I recommend the MSI GX 630 (Available at Amazon and Newegg). If you've got more money than you know what to do with, get an Alienware or Dell XPS.

Multimedia - Watching movies requires a decent integrated graphics card and a large screen. I recommend pretty much any 17" notebook with at least a 250 gigabyte harddrive.

On a final note, if price is a major issue, check out Bensbargains.net. They have links to a lot of great deals.
