"You will need to be logged on as an administrator in order to do this.

Open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

See if there's a warning triangle next to your sound driver. If that's the case, try rolling back/updating the driver (right click). If that fails or you don't have one to roll back - look on the manufacturer's site for the correct, updated, drivers for your OS/sound card, or use one of these generic ones.

For Vista/Win 7...

Download, install the Realtek AC'97 Driver (Windows Vista / Windows 7) , then re-start.

To install the drivers, double click the downloaded file and follow any prompts then re-start (turn off, then on)."

Go on dell and put in your service tag and download and install the Audio Driver. That should rule out a bad driver. If that does not work safe mode and try to play a sound file. If that fails right click "My Computer" and click Manage. Click on devices and see if your audio device shows up in the list. If not you will have to reinstall and/or rip apart your computer to see if the audio cable is loose or disconnected from the motherboard.

Hope it helps

Use the Device Manager to see if there is a problem with the sound card. use the trouble shooter. If this doesn't help, use the delete function to uninstall the software. Restart the computer. Windows will reload the drivers. I have used this trick for printers. It should work for any standard hardware.
