A few hours ago, I was using my laptop and forgot to plug it. I usually unplug it when it's fully charged. A few moments before it became drained, I plugged it and when the display came back because it hibernated for a short time, the battery icon in the notification bar started to have a red X mark. Whenever I hover my cursor on the battery icon, it says "consider replacing your battery". When it is plugged, it shows a charging progress but the battery image is outlined with a red mark and an X occasionally.

Should I really replace my battery? I've had this laptop for almost a year (a year is on July 7th if I am not mistaken). I've never had heavy usages with this because it has been merely used for chatting, browsing and video calls only. I also believe that I never neglected battery care. I am bummed out by this because it makes me feel like my laptop would shut down immediately whenever it isn't plugged in and it makes me paranoid when I am doing academic work.

I also read that this has been a common problem with Windows 7-run notebooks. Has anyone experienced this? What have you done to aid it? My laptop is on "Power Saver" mode.

I doubt if the battery needs to be replaced at this point. Most laptop batteries usually last 2-3 years at least, unless there is heavy usage (which is not the case with your laptop). I have seen that X cross on my battery icon even when it is full, but it hasn't affected my off-power performance.

Click on the start button and in the search box type: c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep .exe (type the above without any spaces and exactly as shown) A box will appear, under system cleanup action choose "Enter system out of box experience" And on Shutdown options choose "Shutdown" This will then reset your laptop as new. Do it once to test so you can make sure it works. Be very careful what instructions you follow on this post as you could damage your computer. Dont open your christmas present again, its not nice your mum has worked hard for this present. Just wait and appreciate it. Charli - Use my option, its called sysprep. There is no need to do a system restore this can often miss out drivers therefore giving you away. All my option does is tell the setup to run again on the next boot.

I have no idea if it is necessary to replace it. You can do some more research. but replacing a battery is simple and easy and should only cost somewhere between $20 and $50 bucks. If you have somewhere nearby which can supply the batteries. So i recommend just replacing it.
