so 40% free disc space
laptop is 3.5 yrs old with celeron processor

yet the fan is going bananas!!!! something is putting a spanner in the works and most notable on the internet apps (firefox or IE) where just running a youtube video results in slow down load and the playing even when fully down loaded clip, the play is halting every 2 seconds and the visual is not only totally out of sync but skips (zero fluid movement)

now i'm giving you and example of what it is like... but just typing this results in me having to pause for several seconds for the screen to catch up with my typing!!!! simple tasks such as clicking on a button can have more than a painful response time!!!! now i KNOW it is not the internet connection.... it is definately the PC, but i don't know what to do about it. i know the processor is fine in terms of spec.

task mamanger has the following info... for internet browser average CPU is about 70/80%
memory usage can get well over 190,000K is the (RAM?)

i'm going nuts here!!! been close to throwing pc against wall.

my theory is that perhaps a system restore several months ago has caused the problem??? if so what can be done... it was a long tie ago. certainly in doing a defrag, it is stopping because there are restore files that can't be defragged

well anyway... hoping someone can help.... please save me from doing something really stupid that involves that wall on the toher side of the room.

thanks

Not much you can do there. Celeron processors were garbage when they were new, and they're even less useful nowadays. 3.5 years is a good run for a low end computer and what you're seeing is typical. Any modern tasks are going to put an extreme strain on the processor, as you've seen. That hard work creates heat, the heat triggers the fans...not much you can do here but keep saving for a more capable rig.

You know how to start Task Manager, so click on Processes and then click on CPU twice.

This will show you what processes are using most of the CPU time. Then google those processes to find what they are and any can be stopped.
