I have a HP pavilion zv6000, Windows Xp sp2. (it wont let me upgrade to 3)

My computer is having problems recognizing things and freezing if it tries. When ever i plug something into my USB ports, the computer gives power to the thing, which means the USB port is functional, but my computer cannot read the thing being plugged in, and if it is something like an iPod, that the computer reads, the computer completely freezes but the ipod still charges, untll the comp freezes. The next problem is that my computer cannot read my battery, it still receives power from the battery, and knows its their, but whenever the computer is not plugged in it says the power is at zero. I have uninstalled all of my computer USB ports and re installed them, disabled then re activated them, i have changed the boot order. I'm out of ideas. Please help

Sounds like your battery is dying or malfunctioning. That can really mess up your laptop. So take it out and use AC power only until you get a replacement battery.

Ok. The first thing i would check for is viruses. If you dont regularly check your computer for virus and or spyware that could be your problem with your comp. freezing up on you. Also try udating your Ipod software, if there are software updates that will most likely fix your problem. Make sure your comp. gets downtime! What i mean by that is, make sure it gets shut off completely and stays off when your not using it. Leaving it on can totally fry your hardware (mainly your vid. card and your processor). Also keep your computer clean, alot of people dont pay attention to how this can really effect the way your computer runs, keeping dust and dirt off it will really help you in the long run.

If none of those things help you first then i would move onto totally wiping your hardrive and reformatting your computer. Windows Xp SP2 has been giving people **** for months and months now. I have a brand new computer and had to install SP2 when i formatted it and i had problems booting for a while. Also there has been problems with Ipod's not being able to be "seen" or booted correctly on Xp operating systems. Its a software problem that Apple hasnt corrected and probably wont until on down the line (or whenever enough people have complained about it, what ever comes first). If you need furthere help please dont hesitate to respond back on this subject and ill give you my email address in a private chat.

Thanks and I hope I've been of some help.

usb:

i'm wondering if the drivers you had installed and then replaced just arent the appropriate ones.

battery:

perhaps the battery needs to be replaced

however, with HP's, it's been my experience that complete reinstalls resolve a lot of these issues. no, i dont mean recovery. I mean wiping the drive and completely redoing everything. if you do this, be sure to burn a backup of all your important junk

this is why slide-rules rule :)

If your battery is old, it may just not hold a charge.

It's possible that you have a motherboard problem, or windows is corrupt. You could try a complete reinstall, but no guarantee that your problem will be fixed.

You might need professional help on this one.

Check to see if your hard drive is 90% full or more. if that is the case then your virtual memory is not functioning and recognition is hampered by timing out through slow retrieval of the memory bus.
