A magnet can badly affect storage media that uses magnetism to store data such as Hard drives and floppy disks. But it will not turn a laptop off. Although there is a big chance that your hard disk is inaccessible now, it's probably recoverable. Try to locate where your HDD is. Most laptops have a latch to access the HDD on the bottom. If you place the magnet right on top of the magnet, or very close to it the recovery chances are low. Remove the hard drive and try to access and recover data using a working computer. Use a software like Zero Assumption Recovery or PCI file recovery to recover data. If the hard drive data is unrecoverable, you can still use the hard drive by reformatting it

Never put a magnet in the neighborhood of any computer or computer screen. A computer is filled with ferromagnetic stuff (f.e. iron,...).

Most probably your hard drive is gone.

I advise you to visit your local computer engineer and explain him your situation.
