Apple...

Apple has the best consumer satisfaction of all computer manufacturer.

Apple has the most secure operating system out on the market (mainly due to the fact that not everyone has it, so hackers don't target it). But Apple is always quick to fix any security holes that are discovered anyway.

The main thing you'll be using for your homework will be Microsoft Office, and they make a version for the Mac.

Mac's in general have longer lifespans than Windows computers. I have an uncle who has been through 3 laptops (1 custom and 2 Fujitsu's) because of viruses and hardware failure. While my parents are still using my old Powerbook G4 from 2004 with no problems at all.

The biggest reason to by a Mac over an HP or any other laptop for than matter... With a Mac you have the choice of running either Mac OS or Windows. With an HP you only have the choice of running Windows or if you're really tech savvy Linux.

With a Mac you're effectively buying 2 computers for the price of one. If you find that you don't like Mac OS, then you can install Windows Vista. If you find that you hate Windows Vista, you can go back to Mac OS.

IBM may not have the looks but is tough so it's useful for professionals who travel a lot.

HP is cheaper and some of the Laptops are really good.

Apple no idea.

The truth is when you buy a laptop look for

1) Battery Backup

2) Toughness i.e. the Laptop shouldn't break when it falls down just once

3) Features

4) The RAM, Hard disk space, graphics etc

Based on some of these requirements choose the brand that you want.

all are fine - except generally for acer which has low end products and virtually no support

a poor value

Netbooks are inexpensive

If you are just browsing - then they are fine - although the screen and especially smaller keyboard may be no joy to use

On top of that for any other use they are generally underpowered

Most brands have low end models which are there to get you into the door at big box stores to purchase extended warranties - which with laptops ( depending on the price may make sense)

Dell is good in that they have actual service

Asus are highest quality , followed by Lenovo perhaps

They all have lower end laptops and higher end higher quality business quality laptops

Most of the components are not really theirs but some one else's assembled

The first question is do you need a laptop or is it a a piece of furniture for status

If you are a student , need portability or perhaps have a very small space to put the computer or you are a student and moving at some point - then laptops make sense

Otherwise laptops are a stupid dumb idea

Laptops are slow , expensive , cannot be fixed for the most part

If repairable they use only that brands parts for the most part - which are old parts and slower than the current

If say a dvd burns out - you cannot just go to best buy and buy a dvd burner on sale

Women seem to love laptops as they are "cute"

Take a look at these rankings:

http://blog.laptopmag.com/best-worst-notebook-brands-2013/3

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.

Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.

Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.

Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

Whenever possible, choose a business class laptop like a Thinkpad from Lenovo or an EliteBook or ProBook from HP. They are much more reliable than consumer grade PCs and the tech support is much better. I have found them to be well worth the extra cost even purchased for personal/recreational issue instead of by a business. I have dealt with far too many consumer grade laptops having problems to ever look back.

Heh, That's an open ended question since computer brands are like fashion tastes. They vary widely from person to person.

Apple makes some killer laptops in their Powerbooks. If Windows is your platform, Toshiba makes a quite sturdy laptop. If you own one already you know that bigger screen means heavier laptop so be careful what you wish for, you just might get it and be carrying around 45 lbs of gear.

Avoid HP and Comcrap laptops like the plague. Dell you have a 50/50 chance of getting a good one.

(1) Do you care about the Operating System? Mac is the obvious choice (IMHO) there, and Apple is one of the two companies highest rated for robust hardware in the laptop world. They offer all ranges of "power" from a simple-minded laptop to a "souped-up monster".

(2) If you're rather more a Windows worlder, then if you'd rather have a robust long-lasting computer, the high-rated choice is IBM. Comfy keyboard. Wide ranges of power available. Our 5-year-old IBM Thinkpad is still a workhorse.

(3) Don't necessarily go overboard with disk capacity! You might get wooed and bedazzeled by the idea of having two kazillion gigs of disk space running at some unbelievable speed, but make a realistic evaluation of what you REALLY need to store! We have 75G on our HP and we haven't used anywhere near half yet. My new Mac has an overwhelming amount more (and I didn't max out what was available) and I have no hope of ever using near half. Save yer bucks.

(4) Quite possibly with Windows, the more memory the better. With our Mac, 2G is plenty and this little booger hums...could have gotten 4.

Just don't get romanced and overspend! I was about to, but got reasonable at the last danged minute!

Some people will tell you that certain companies use better parts, that's simply not true. They all use basically the same part.So which one is better, last year consumer reports annual report had 25,000 laptop reports on how well each brand did.The results where the same as they have been for the last 3 years.Their isn't much difference between laptop brands.Only Apple stood out as better in quality, and not by much.My Dells have always worked fine and lasted a long time.I have a lenovo which so far is working great. My advice is just find one with features you what or need then look up that model on Amazon and make sure users have been happy with it.

You are going to have to look for something or sale or a refurbished. That's if you know what fast is.Most users have no idea.My fast laptop cost $1000.My dell is ok and it cost $600.There is no where to look besides the places you looked. You said all of them. What's left? Nothing. There's no hidden computer company so don't know what to tell you.So my idea is pick one and buy it, I think right now you get more bang for your buck with lenovo. You can go to newegg, but mostly you get older models or the new ones are no cheaper and in many cases cost more than buying from the manufacturer.

inside they are all the same, intel or amd, same type of ram, etc

what is different is the parts used by these manufactures to put the laptop together

screen, speakers, keyboad, pad, ports , optical drives, casing, etc

next what os do you like - windows or apples os

in my experience the american brands have always been lower quality build compared to japan

so go with japanese brand,- sony, fujitsu, etc,

apple is very good quality but you will pay a pretty penny

one more thing.....laptops are becoming useless and tablets are able to do just about the same as a laptop, that might be another route to take, if your just browsing ,email, facebook you know basic stuff then go with tablet

A lot depends on what kind of activities you'll be using your laptop for. Heavy gaming and graphics activities will demand more RAM and good quality graphics card. Plus look for good quality authorized technical support in your local are when you finalize a brand.

I had great experience with HP laptop for more than 5 years, Never had a single complaint with my laptop. Dell laptops have good technical support too.

If it's going to be used for note taking and projects only, I would go with a netbook. I have found HP laptops to last the longest and work best for me.

If you're looking for a dual purpose laptop (school stuff and leisure), I would still get the netbook, but also a large monitor you can connect it to (duplicate screen) along with a separate keyboard for home use.

To whom this may concern.

NO! Mac, Dell, and HP are totally junk! I will not question the Sony, but they are so expensive. What I got was a Toshiba and it works perfectly. About $800.00 but it is totally worth the money. If you wait until the holiday's you can even get a free printer. That is what I did. I hope my advice helped you in your problem!

I have to say that Macbooks are amazing. Very user friendly, very fast, extremely safe and not susceptible to viruses etc. and if anything does go wrong with them going into the apple store and getting someone at the genius bar to take a look at it is no problem at all.

They have a higher initial cost, but you definitely get your money's worth seeing as you save loads on virus safety and getting it fixed as it never needs it

Listen to me carefully :) I have been reviewing laptops and tablets for over 10 years. Owned everything from IBM to Macs. If you are looking for quality and performance, and dependability. Scratch Dell & HP off your list. Dell is crap, they used to be pretty good, but yeah, don't buy a Dell! HP once had a good reputation, but has declined greatly

Sony...ehhhh well not bad, but pretty costly and not all that durable.

Toshiba...depending on which system, Toshiba makes some pretty good laptops, and they are very durable and dependable.

HP...ummm...I put them right up there with Dell...crap and not too dependable.

Fujitsu...Nice!! They put a lot of innovation and hard to kill components into their brand.

Lenovo, Very durable and very dependable.

You did forget one other...Samsung...They make a good laptop with a good dependable internals.

ASUS...pretty much a cookie cutter system manufacturer, but pretty dependable..and durable for the costs.

Now...lol...are you ready?

If I was going to buy a brand new laptop today, I would look at these following examples. Now you didn't give a price range, but I am going to offer some below $500 that are pretty darn awesome and are touch screens baby, yeah...Sorry doing my Austin Powers...ok here we go!

Apple

Apple is by far the best laptop brand (2010) as it beats most others in almost all departments. Though most of Apple's products are on the expensive side, performance of Apple Macbook and Apple Macbook Pro has proved that its products are worth every penny. With the latest Mac OS installed in these machines, their performance is a cut above the rest. What sets Apple apart is its prompt customer service and technical support, besides the excellent overall design. If you want to opt for one of the best laptops (2010), go for Apple.

Sony

Another expensive but trusted brand is Sony. Its VAIO series is a hit in terms of design, features and performance. Check out Sony if you want to go for stylish and sturdy designs.

Lenovo

Known for creating some of the most ergonomically efficient laptop computers, Lenovo is the best laptop brand (2010), if one purely focuses on functionality and features. Its Thinkpad Edge and IdeaPad laptops are some of the best products to hit the market in the recent past.

Toshiba

If you are looking for low cost, high performance laptops, Toshiba is one of the best laptop brands to opt for. They have delivered one of best netbooks in the form of Toshiba Mini NB305 and one of the best laptops in the form of Toshiba Satellite E205. One of the most innovative laptop brands, Toshiba is a good choice when you want to make a budget choice. Even if it's not the cheap laptop brand (2010), it certainly offers many products in the low cost range.

HP

HP was and still remains one of the biggest and best laptop computer manufacturers in the world. HP is a pioneer when it comes to bringing about innovation in laptop technology. It's the only laptop computer manufacturer company that can supply you with custom made products according to your requirements. HP still remains one of the best, despite a large amount of competition from other brands. The sheer range and variety of products makes it one of the most unique laptop brands.

Dell

If you want to buy a quality product and price is no issue, then Dell remains one of the best choices. The reason why it's the best laptop brand 2010, in terms of quality, features and performance is its reliability. It is tough to single out one as the fastest laptop brand (2010), but it could be a Dell product with its power packed features. With this, we reach the end of best laptop brands list for 2010.

Acer

Acer Laptop was ranked as the world's No. 4 branded PC vendor. Also Microsoft had retained the power to license the operating system to other computer manufacturers. The only part which had to be duplicated was the BIOS (Basic Input Output System), which Compaq did legally by using reverse-engineering by paying a sum of $1 million.
