If you'll look at the keys across the top, F1, F2, F3, F4, etc. Most of them have other symbols. When you hold the fn key and press one of the 'function' buttons, they perform other functions, like wifi on / off, volume, brightness, etc.

(edit: yes, and other keys on your keyboard. Some keyboard have number functions with the letters if you don't have a number pad)

Its a modifier key. Its mostly used to modify the "F" keys at the top lf the keyboard, like on some laptops the F keys are automaticly used to do things like volume or Screen brightness, but some programs use the F keys for certian things so you hold down the Fn key and then press one of the F keys to do whatever function is assigned by whatever program you are using. That said, some laptops have the F keys do their "normal" pperations by default and when you press the FN key it changes the fuctions to things like "Volume" and "Brightness". I hope this helped.

Different manufacturers of laptop computers use different symbols, characters and letters on the keyboard. The best way to find what the key is intended to do is to consult the User Manual that came with your machine. Usually in the User Manual, the manufacturer gives many diagrams showing the parts of the computer. If, for some reason, you do not have a Manual with you, then you can visit the website of the manufacturer and find details about your model.

Some computer makers ask you to register with them so you can get updates or advisories when they are available. For this you will have to provide the details about the machine like Serial Number and Model Number. If you find it difficult to locate where the Serial Number appears, it is better not to remove any parts inside the casing if you are not sure. It is better to get assistance of somebody familiar with computers. If you still don't want to bother, you can ask the manufacturer to find the serial number of your machine (yes they can do it if you provide other details like Model Number). For that, you have to give permission to them because they are doing it remotely and your security software may not allow it.

Another suggestion I would make if you do not have a User Manual is to search for it online. Just enter the make and model of your machine, followed by the words "user manual" and you are sure to find it (mostly in PDF form).
