There are 3 types of Windows Installation Disk.

1. An Oem or Recovery Oem Install Disk

2. A Non-Oem or Retail Version Install Disk

3. An Upgrade Disk

The Following Applies To You:

How many computers do you plan to have?

Multiple? Go For The Non-Oem Version

Just One? Go For The Oem Version

Insert the installation disk and ReBoot your computer.

Just follow the stepBystep instructions:

Delete and Create Partitions, start the Format process, and Install Windows.

(if you have recovery CD, the info above may not apply)

Your system most likely can't handle Windows Vista or 7

Here are some Operating Systems you can download legally:

Use This To Burn An ISO to CD or DVD blank (not data):

Laptops are usually made by big manufacturers. They usually use OEM version of Windows XP. If the sticker says something like Dell, Acer, HP, etc, then it is OEM version.

You need OEM Version installation CD. XP Home and XP Pro has different installation CD. So you need to get proper OEM XP Home or OEM XP Pro CD. If your friend has OEM version of XP Home/XP Pro, you can borrow it to install it. If you have retail version, it might not accept the keys, so you need to call Microsoft and beg for new key. Some were successful at getting new key, and others were not.

If you can't get any installation CD, I saw some people suggesting that they download the .iso and burn it to CD somehow. I'm not sure about this, though.

Download XP from the microsoft site, or find the recovery disk, if not, then I would install Ubuntu, because it is a lot faster and better in my opinion than Windows if you are unable to install XP.
