Hi,

Depending on what sort of password it prompts will determine how to try to fix this.

If its a Sleep system password (ie you laptop is in hibernate mode and you are asked to type in a non windows password), you need to take the battery out of the laptop and try and reboot it that way (you might need to leave it out for 30-60 mins).

If this doesn't work, then you can try taking the laptop to bits, finding the CMOS Battery on the motherboard and then taking that out... (be careful though, because this will void you're warranty - i would only do this as an absolute last resort!)

If you can now get to the first boot screen of the computer you should try resetting the password, so you dont get into future bother with it. To do this, i recommend using one of the tools on Ultimate Boot CD : http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Use burn the image to CD and boot from CD. Its quite self explanatory.

If its a windows 7 password, then look at this link and use this tool to reset it :

Win7/2k/XP/Vista Password recovery : http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

Let me know how you get on...

If it is ONLY the windows logon password that you are lacking, you could either burn a CD with kon-boot, or install it on a USB drive, it would allow you to simply bypass the password by entering anything at all. And by doing it this method you can avoid incompatibilities with possibly encrypted files on the drive being inaccessible from forcefully resetting the password from an outside tool, this would allow you to type a new password from the Control Panel. This is the "safest method" as there are no file modifications, simply memory modifications and those go away after a reboot without the kon-boot disc or USB drive in.

Try Safe Mode first...

On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 (be aware that some manufacturers use F8 for system recovery!) then use arrow keys to highlight 'Safe Mode with networking' and hit Enter/Return, click on the 'Administrator' account (not the one you created), enter the Administrator password (if you don't know it, there probably isn't one so leave it blank) and hit Enter/Return.

Or as a last resort...

1. Reboot, and press F11 or the R key to start the recovery process.

2. Select either "Full System Restore (Destructive ***This will erase all your unsaved data!***)" or "Full System Restore (With Backup)"*.

3. Click "Next", and then click "Yes" to confirm the recovery process.

4.Wait for the computer to restore itself. When it is done, click "Reboot" to reboot the computer.

*Full System Restore With Backup preserves data in the My Documents folder, but requires 4 GB of disk space.
