Hi

Use a linux distro as all can be made to look however you want.

In puppy there are 8 difrent desktop managers you can install.

I love to add wbar (mac style with expanding icons, Conky which has good looking graphs and dials showing cpu and ram usage.

You can even have a rotating cube with a different desktop on each side eeer that 6.

Mac just has the one desktop, Linux has thousands of different combinations.

You can even make your own icons.

I have even done a desktop with no icons or tool bar everything being accessed by a right click.

GNOME, KDE and XFCE are all seperate environments with special focus. Gnome: Simple, clean, professional desktop. My personal choice. KDE: Still unstable, but focuses on eye candy as well as many K-branded apps. XFCE: Lightweight environment for weaker computers. As for your apps, they should all run the same under each using Wine. There are no ports that I know of. GIMP is better than Photoshop from my experience (I started with PS and switched to GIMP) but I hear PS works well in Wine. If you are into media, I'd avoid Ubuntu. The best for media would be UbuntuStudio or Wolvix. Edit: As the other poster said, Linux Mint is a great alternative. It's perfect as a home PC. I also just realised that maybe a Mac would be the best choice for you (media, graphics, etc are where Macs excell!)

Best is what you feel comfortable with. Linux wise, just about every one of them can install exactly the same files and programs. Differences is mostly the Desktop Enviroments, Default installed programs and software and what files will and will not run in those Desktop Environments. You customize the Linux you choose to be what you want it to be software wise. Unfortunately Unity is not stable and doesn't work with every thing, it was a developers Linux. It didn't originate from Ubuntu, it originated from Mandriva developers. MAC is only better in it's own sense because they write their own software to work directly with the hardware installed in the computer. They are a Proprietary Operating system and use Proprietary Software. A MAC is more an investment type of computer.

Look wise, you can make Linux look any way you want it to look by installing the files required to make it look that way. You have Cairo Dock, you have 3D Compiz Fusion that can display 3D rotating Cubes with programs running on each side of the Cube. The Desktop looks depends on how much work and effort into making it look that way you want it to. MAC you don't really have that many choices.

Ubuntu and Xubuntu are the same thing. Ubuntu uses the Unity Desktop Environment http://unity.ubuntu.com/ while Xubuntu uses Xfce http://www.xfce.org/ .

In this case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It really depends on what it is that you personally think looks good. I personally like the Cinnamon Desktop Environment http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/ or MATE http://mate-desktop.org/ . Although I am currently using Sabayon Gnome Edition.

I recommend that you look into Linux Mint http://www.linuxmint.com/ or Sabayon Linux https://www.sabayon.org/ . Sabayon has the Gentoo hardened kernel, if you are interested in security https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=FAQ#What_Editions_are_available_in_Sabayon_Linux.3F .

As for Apple's MacOSX; it is built on top of FreeBSD, OpenBSD, & NetBSD with their own modifications and proprietary crap making it incompatible with FreeBSD.

Out of those three? Ubuntu, but you will need some skills computering. Ubuntu comes as a server without a desktop part of it. You have to type in commands to download the desktop and to install some programs. It's a nice slim design and I like it more than Mac.
