Question:
AMD Radeon 6770M screen tearing issues?
2012-01-26 14:51:26 UTC
Dear troubleshooters,
I have searched everywhere for a solution with no avail.
I have a Hp dv6-6172tx. i72670QM Radeon 6770M 2GB.
I'm having screen tearing issues playing most of the current games. I tried playing with triple buffering and V-sync but still had serious game tearing issues. I tried updating the BIOS to F1B and catalyst drivers but unfortunately the the version only said 11.10 even after I installed the 11.12 version. Am I doing something wrong here? HP doesn't seem to let me install the newest drivers even after I uninstalled catalyst.

Besides updating my catalyst drivers and BIOS to the latest, is there another more obvious solution that I'm missing? Screen tearing issues especially noticeable in playing games like Skyrim.

Mad props for those who offer a comprehensive solution. (more than one)

Thanks in advance

first of all Hp DV series is nororious for video issues, their heat sink isnt the best and needs repasted, take a peek at youtube, ive seen many of them repaird within just a litte bit of time, by just cleaning then putting new thermal paste on.

HP is notorious for screwing up BIOS (and then not updating them). I have been the rounds on one which I wanted to update to accept Windows 7, but which HP would not release an update for. I finally had to crash update to a non-HP BIOS for the mainboard (which now runs perfectly btw).

However, your video issue doesn't seem to be something that would be related to updating the BIOS.

Tearing is usually a vertical sync problem. And since my setup is Nvidia, I don't have the Catalyst setup programme. But in the Nvidia setup is a section u can tweak the video settings on a game-by-game basis (or globally). Maybe ATI/AMD has a similar section in Catalyst u can tweak just for the instant game. U would want to enable vertical sync for each game in which u noticed the problem.

Another thing u can try is a framerate limiter. This is an addon that has to be configured for each game. It basically limits the framerate of the game to a certain setting (usually 30 fps for a 60hz monitor). This can often stop the tearing (and also reduce system load). Of course u might still get the tearing if the framerate drops below the set limit.

My final suggestion is to try different screen resolutions. Usually the screen resolution which matches the monitor's native resolution works best.

Help for my HP dv6 6121tx graphics issue

Hello there.. I hope i am not disturbing you.. I am facing this problem ever since i hav formatted my laptop (June 2011 model) using a cracked win7 64 bit ultimate. I hav installed all the necessary drivers and the same version of the graphics card drivers as in my previous setting.. But now when im running games they are giving poor performance (getting stuck for abt 1 second every now and then) which didnt happen before. And when im running dxdiag its showing "Intel HD graphics family". Is it the same in your machine too?? And its showing Direct Draw, direct 3d and AGP Texture acceleration enabled. Can you provide a solution for the gaming issue? Everything else is running perfectly fine.

1) Try an older version of Catalyst, even back to 10.0

2) Check any "overclocking" settings in Catalyst, even if you have not set them, just enabling that may cause screen tearing (I had that with a 5870). make sure it is turned off.

3) It's an HP...enough said, sadly....
