I just bought this new laptop from dell (inspiron 1545). It works great but there is not much hard drive space. Im trying to get the right external hard drive for it, like the biggest one i can get. i had one ordered but when i got it it was defective so i don't even know if that was the right kind!!
Can someone please help me understand this computer stuff and what i can do to help make my laptop as good as it can be. maybe even some hard drive recommendations

You can replace the hard drive in your laptop. They take 2.5" hard drives. Buy a new one, your laptop can handle up to a 350GB hard drive. You can remove the old one by unscrewing a panel under your laptop and taking the HD out and putting the new one in. Obviously this means you will have to install windows on the new hard drive. Hope this helps

any usb external hard drive will work, so there is no "right kind". as long as your computer has a usb port, you're good to go. also there is no limit to the number of usb drives you can get. i currently own 4: 2 actual drives, a pocket flash drive shaped like domo that i got from 7-11 for $1.99, and an mp3 player with data storage.

---> all are made by different manufacturers, [the flash drive probably by some overworked toddler in singapore] and there was no reason to consider whether they "would work" with my computer. they all work. don't sweat it.

next, if the computer is new, the chances are good you don't really need to be worrying about shelling out for a drive now. it doesn't affect the way your computer works until you start accumulating buttloads of video and music and then have to decide whether to delete something so you can have room for more. //that's// when you need an external drive.

unless you're just all hot to keep shopping! buying gadgets is fun. but for this, finding the best balance between use price and capacity is the key criteria.

as far as quality and reliability i'd go with lacie. you can get it in a variety of capacities from 80gb on up to several tb's. a close second is iomega. i've had a few problems with them in the past but mostly good.

if you're looking for a size look at your existing hard drive and triple it. quadruple to be safe. that way you're unlikely to run out of space any time soon. and even if you do you can always buy another hd.

oh, and make sure it's a usb drive and not firewire. while i personally prefer firewire dell will only take a usb hd.

any external hard drive would be fit for a laptop. just as long as its end is a USB.

hope this helps. xD
