Question:
Why do computers slow over time?
2008-12-17 23:12:56 UTC
I got a new laptop just in October, and it's quite slow at the start and when shutting down, the button is taking forever to shut down. It can take from 15-20 minutes, then I shut it off by using the button. Though it doesnt happen frequently. I installed only 6-10 softwares in this computer, and the KB is huge! I have an inspiron 1525...

can anyone explain why computers slow overtime?

P.S. yes I have ccleaner, glary utilities, smart defrag, zone alarm...

Well, computers can get slow because you install a lot of software on it, because that can install a lot of services and a lot of programs that run at start-up. Also, if you install and uninstall many programs, they Windows Registry gets cluttered and it will slow down your computer. Ccleaner can help with that. The hard drive can get fragmented so I would recommend Auslogics Defrag to defrag your hard drive. Also, you could have a virus that is slowing down your computer. Lastly, computers get slow just because they're old. Computers don't last forever and the hardware does wear down. Computers do have electricity flowing through them all the time so that should be no surprise (try dusting the inside of your computer with a compressed air can once in a while to get rid of the dust and prevent overheating, that should help a bit).

Computers slow down over time due to disk fragmentation-especially of system files, installation of poorly written programs that hog resources, decrease in available disk space, virus attacks etc.

To restore your computer's performance, assuming you have no hardware issues, do this:

(1) Run a FULL anti-virus scan with a good virus scanner. Use the latest virus definitions file.

(2) Run anti-spyware scans with Spybot S&D and malwarebytes.

(3) Ensure all Microsoft security updates are applied.

(4) Run disk cleanup to delete old temp files and other junk

(5) Run a thorough disk defrag. Use a good defragmenter for this, and also run a boot-time defrag to fix the MFT and page file if they are fragmented. You can check out Diskeeper 2009, which is widely acknowledged to be the best defragger around. Their website has free 30-day trial versions. http://www.diskeeper.com

(6) Disable unnecessary background processes and services that take up memory.

(7) Make sure all the hardware components have the latest and most stable drivers. Video card performance in particular is strongly dependent on drivers.

Good Luck!

The slow shutdown can be attributed to the amount of programs running in the background or your registry.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Because your computer has lots of programs that has to end task or wait for it to finish. Anyway shutting down your computer when shut down, start up or when your PC's hard drive is on full load it can cause a head crash unless if your using a SSD. You will damage the memory of the SSD if you shut it off like that. And KB is less, but maybe you mean MB or GB its Huge. Anyway vista uses a lot of hard drive space. My computer started with 10GB and now it uses 77.5GB (120GB HHD). I have only store 7 or 10GB in there. Yes to me before my laptop doesn't need to load anything with logged on to desktop maybe just 2 or 3 secs. A lot of laptops have a very small hard drive and most of them are 1.5GB sec 5,400rpm or some are moving onto 7,200rpm or even SSD. As in resource monitor its about 8mb sec , lower or higher at desktop loading and the CPU load is only 0-40%.

Well that's a common problem on windows machine. perhaps you need to reinstall your os (and I think that's the best solution). Try nlite to create lighter os. If reinstall is not an option then try to do a lot of clean up. Ccleaner is nice option, but Thar'ss only to clean temporary files. Try scanning for viruses and spyware. Take a look at filehippo.com, and choose on or two anti spywaree and anti virus (they have freeware version,no need to worry about trial expiration).

The truth, I never know why windows always slow overtime. But as far as I know with proper maintenance a windows installation could last for a year without too much slow down.

Oh, to speed up shutdown process try to tweak your windows setting, let windows to auto end unresponding process or service. I think thats the best way to speed up restart and shutdown. If you use windows xp pro use gpedit.msc (start-->run-->gpedit.msc-->OK), find something like autoend task or process. Or use command prompt to shutdown computer (start-->run-->shutdown /f /t 0 --> OK)

Hope it help :-)

everything builds up over time like errors and that sort of thing those cleaners that you have are useless you would be better off trying COMODO registry cleaner.

Try uninstalling some unnecessary software then run this then defrag it and you should notice a difference also try a disk clean up that should help as well

PS it could also be you anti virus
