i inherited a ibm thinkpad t42,its password locked,it wont boot,a screen with a lock appears.i was told to take the cmos battery out,let sit 2 days reinstall battery and it should forget the password,i did it and wont get past this locked battery screen,,can you IBM-ers help? thanx

if it's the hardDisk pasword, You're stuffed! I don't think you can install a new Hd either!

If its just the power on password, hold F8 while booting up and reset it in the Bios.

IBM Thinkpads have very good safe practices, such that the former trick of eliminating the CMOS battery gained't help. the following is a guy on ebay providing a service the position he fixes the area.(i have not in any respect used this guy's service, so caveat emptor)

go to you local dealer where you got the thing and tell them the situation they may just replace it for you or fix it and if they charge to you fix problem raise hell
