A MAC has traditionally been considered the "industry standard" of graphic design. This is because the color gamut a MAC produces has a far greater range than that of "windows" based machines. This is because MAC hardware (the computer) & software (OS X) are integrated unlike windows which runs on a large variety of machines that are not always "calibrated" to have an effectively matching color space (gamut). Basically, the color space you see on a MAC will always look exact (or very very close) when viewd on other MACs. Windows based machines lack this accuracy not because window's has an inferior gamut capability, but, because windows typically runs on various computers that have varying color capability. This is why MAC is the industry standard - because when I am sending a proof to a printer or client and they are using MAC - I know they are seeing the same color that is represented by my MAC monitor.

Hope that helps.

Historically Macs have been the way to go for design, but Windows computers are catching up quickly and have more software options to choose from.

Well the guy who said "as powerful as possible" hit the nail on the head, but add to that with a butt-ton of storage and a eally nice, really big screen. You will be spending an awful lot of your time staring at the screen, and it's nice to have accurate, and bright color. Try www.widowpc.com www.alienware.com or www.apple.com (keep in mind you will be adding software and graphics input hardware too) www.adobe.com and www.wacom.com

As powerful as possible :) I think that you should choose a very good video card and lots of RAM.
