I have a dell xps m1210 laptop with windows vista home basic and i want to backup my hard drive with an external hard drive. I have seagate 500gb. Whenever I try to back it up it would say that "Disc C has errors. You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored" So i click Check the disk for errors, but when I click it it says "Windows can't check the disk while its in use". So how do I go about this?

'Check your hard disk for errors'

procedure below,

Do this on the two laptops: Go to "My Computer." Right click the "Local Disk C:" then click properties. Read where it says used space. With this information you can then figure out how big of an external hard drive you need. I recommend you use Acronis True Image.

Unplug it and restart your computer. It sounds like you have something reading or writing a file to the external. If this doesnt work, try testing the drive on another computer (maybe you have a faulty one?)

Get Fedora and use rsync,
