0x0000007b is an error code for the "Inaccessible Boot Device" STOP error in the Windows XP operating system. STOP errors are fatal malfunctions that prompt Windows to completely cease all processor activity and shut down the system to prevent physical damage to it. The "inaccessible boot device" error is a general error covering hard drive problems. The error could be triggered by anything from a boot-sector virus to a malfunctioning hard drive.

In the event of a 0x0000007b error, first reboot the PC and load Windows in safe mode by press f8 before the Windows XP logo appears and select "Start in Safe Mode." If the error does not occur, immediately back up important files and data and perform a repair with the recovery console. If the operating system fails to load, perform a repair with the recovery console.

To perform a operating system repair with the recovery console, insert the Windows XP CD and reboot the computer. When the "Press any key to run setup" prompt appears, press a key on the keyboard. Press the "R" key to start the recovery console. You will be prompted for the administrator's password. If you do not have one, simply press enter. Once the console is loaded, type "chkdsk /f /r" without the quotation marks. The recovery console will attempt to repair your operating system, including the boot sector. After the recovery console is done, it will give a report on all errors fixed.

Reboot your PC and see if the computer will boot into Windows XP. If Windows XP still fails to load, you may need to format your computer and re-install Windows.

Did you mess around with the bios? Did you change from SATA mode to IDE or mess with ACHI settings? Run fixmbr if it is on the hirens disc just to rule out a boot sector virus.

It is could be an old xp disk (sp1 or sp2) that does not have your sata drivers.

I believe there is a screen that says "press f6 to load storage drivers" or something like that at the setup screen. You need to pay attention to that, and download "mass storage" or sata drivers from your manufacturer's driver site for your computer. After pressing f6 put in the disc that you saved the driver to. Sadly, I think it might have to go on a floppy for some old xp versions.

First check your components all the drives and cable are attach in perfect mode and working.

Now check your bios setup and check that hard disk, RAM and cd/dvd writer are showing.

After that reeboot your computer and install windows as usual, if every time you see same the blue screen error then change your RAM and reinstall the windows. It will be helpful to you.

This issue may occur if the new motherboard contains an embedded IDE controller that has a different chipset than the original motherboard.

The bad news is that the machines hardware may have become damaged and as a result you are receiving this message. You may have a hard drive or memory problem and you would have to replace either of these to fix the problem. If this is a laptop you are working with, reseating the memory and/or hard drives may be your fix if the machine has been jostled, this can cause components to become loose.

You can look over the technet articles for more suggestions on this error:

type in the stop error in the search field and place Windows XP, either before or after the error code.

Hope this helps.

i think it is a booting error, sometimes viruses also damage the boot sector of hd, but it is a minor problem. firstly u must backup all ur data (if any), now go to the BIOS press defalt all bios settings, save and exit the bios, now format or delete (delete recommended) all drives of ur hd. And most important check if ur pc supports xp or not.
