Question:
The keyboard of my new Dell laptop exploded. Dell does not want to compensate. Any legal action possible?

My Inspiron 6000 Dell laptop was only two years old and not under warranty. My pregnant wife and I heard a bang from our home's office. We saw that part of our laptop's keyboard was dismantled and literally exploded.

I contacted Dell and pointed out that what occured was a safety issue and no product should explode like this only after two years after use, possibly causing personal injury. After being passed around from one extension to another, all I got from them was "Sorry, your PC was not under warranty at the time... and nothing they can do".

Further contact through email resulted in them offering me $50 worth of gift certificate toward purchaing of Dell products...
I refused to take their offer. In their last email they took away their last offer....

Please let me know if there is any legal action I can take against Dell. No product should explode causing possible injury to users even if not under warranty. I explained this to Dell with no result. Thank you.

Its those Dell Insprions!!! With me it was the input for my powercord- it snapped off into the laptop and they told me it's not covered on my warranty, and that if I wanted to fix it I would need A WHOLE NEW HARD DRIVE. all because Dell likes to use cheap plastic on their parts.

No offense but how exactly does a laptop keyboard explode? I've been in the industry for 23 years and never...never heard nor can I figure out how it could happen. There isn't anything that I can fathom to generate heat, etc. to do so. I'm surprised they even offered you anything.



In regards to legal action, you're going to get nowhere. The laptop was out of warranty. I've seen laptops worth $4,000 die with multiple failures literally a month out of their warranty and the client gets no compensation. It's the whole point of an extended warranty. How do they know you didn't do it yourself?



However, I can tell you that you can find a brand new keyboard on-line for under $40 quite easily.

It's not Dell's fault.



They issued a recall on those batteries some time ago. The batteries were made by Sony, but Dell customer service should have still been more accommodating.



They will not compensate u much b/c of the warranty expiration.



You don't have a case against Dell b/c they notified the public, it was all over the news, regardless of how incompetent the customer service rep was.



Just don't buy from Dell again. Buy a Toshiba. They're a little more expensive, but they are well built....and more importantly, they won't blow up on you.

waste of time and money to go legal, put it down to experience, and be thankful no one was hurt, follow up the battery recall? Advertise your experience in a PC mag and buy another brand of laptop. Keyboards get a lot of stuff dropped in them from dust to drinks to food crumbs, pays to have a small soft brush close by to clean it out, and don't leave it on 24/7 if you do, laptops overheat a lot quicker than a desktop, due to how the are constructed.

I would contacat a lawyer/attorney and get a free consulation ( hope that's the word for it lol ) with them. Explain what happened and how you feel. I can tell you that usually when you send a formal letter threatening to seek legal action and place a lawyer/attorney's name next to it that you are talking to, most companies will aknowledge it better than you just getting mad. unless someone was actually hurt then probably not. There not going to reimberse you because it's not under warranty. There not going to pay you any money because somebody could have gotten hurt and didn't
